School Girl Arrested
A girl attending Kimbe Primary School in West New Britain has been arrested and charged for posting what police said were defamatory and false statements on Facebook. Provincial police commander Supt Jim Namora said yesterday that the girl (name withheld) was identified after police saw a post she allegedly made on Facebook.

Nationally owned helicopter company Helifix has welcomed a new helicopter to its fleet.
Wisil Qualifies
Toea Wisil from Papua New Guinea just ran an Olympic Qualifier over 100m Womens. Stopping the clock at 11.29s means a direct Qualifier for Rio being 0.03 under the mark with a perfect tail wind of 1.9m/s.

Boats to Help Combat Piracy
In the efforts to minimise law and order issues, the Morobe provincial government has purchased two boats each with a 75 horsepower outboard engine motors at the cost of K66,000 each. The two boats will go towards assisting the Salamaua Local Level Government (LLG) in combating law and order issues as well as policing sea piracy matters.

Air Niugini
The national airline is planning for the introduction of direct air services between Papua New Guinea and the Peoples Republic of China following the recent signing of an historic air services agreement. The Chairman of Air Niugini, Sir Frederick Reiher, said the air services agreement would enable Air Niugini to introduce seasonal charters between Port Moresby and Shanghai during the Chinese New Year celebrations early in 2017 and for other holiday periods next year.

Lifebrandz
Lifebrandz has said that it plans to acquire all the shares of Tolukuma Gold Mines, a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea that owns a non-operational gold mine there, for US$212 million. The purchase will be made by allotting new shares to the vendor.

Morobe Students Raise Funds
A week after the termination of 2016 academic year, students at the University of Papua New Guinea have already vacated the campus. Those who are not Port Moresby residents have started leaving for home, but some are still waiting for airline tickets to leave for their respective provinces. Students from Morobe have started raising funds to get home.

Vanuatu Students Repatriated
Ni-Vanuatu students are being repatriated from Papua New Guinea, after months of protests and tensions at universities there. The Daily Post newspaper reports that twelve students from the University of PNG in Port Moresby and nine from UniTech in Lae, will return to Vanuatu today.

Gardens Planted in Drought Recovery
People in Papua New Guinea have planted additional gardens to counter a weaker than expected harvest.
Much of the Highlands, along with other parts of PNG, suffered badly from eight months of severe drought brought by El Nino from the second half of last year.

The globalality of Football - The PNG Under 20 Women's World Cup team has been heard practicing the Viking chant.
Every day brings news of the travels of the Viking chant, made famous by the supporters of the Icelandic men's national football team at the EURO 2016 in France. Vísir reports it has made it all the way to the island nation of Papua New Guinea, north of Australia, which is about as far away from Iceland as you can go without embarking on a trip to the moon.

Vale Pastor Geoffrey Pomaleu
54-year-old Pastor Geoffrey Pomaleu, the head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea, has died in Lae on the 4th of July - a day after collapsing at a camp for pastors' children. His body is being flown around the country for seven separate funeral events over four days.

Asylum Seekers Threatened
Refugees from Manus Island have been held hostage during an armed hold-up in Port Moresby over the weekend, with reports at least one detainee was assaulted and hotel security were fired on by up to five gunmen. A detainee, who asked not to be named, confirmed that he hid under a table during the attack, and that around half the group of 17 was held hostage.

Police Seek Medical Records
Port Moresby police have obtained a search warrant to obtain medical reports of the UPNG students who were injured during the standoff between students and police on the 8th of June. This is part of an internal investigation into the incident. The search warrant had already been served to the Port Moresby General Hospital

PNG Strikes?
A civil society group in Papua New Guinea says its call for peaceful strike action is being enacted by people in the country's three main cities. The group issued the call after the Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, ignored its ultimatum to stand down by midnight last night to face fraud allegations.
