Rugby League World Cup

The Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG), Loi Bakani, has said new bank notes with reduced sizes will soon be released to the public. Mr Bakani said the size of the K100 will remain however, from K50 down to K2 will be reduced in sizes.
Rabaul Queen Trial
A trial will begin on the 2nd of November at the National Court in Kokopo for those implicated in the Rabaul Queen sea disaster, according to the head of investigation Chief Inspector Ben Turi.
PM Frustrated Over Delay
Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, is frustrated with bureaucratic red tape that has stalled progress on the expansion of the Port Moresby sewerage system. The project had been signed 18 years ago with the Japanese government but nothing has come out of it. The Japanese government will provide funds for the project costing K206.5 million.
The abuse of water in squatter settlements is taking its toll on the water level at the Sirinumu Dam, according to Eda Ranu chief executive officer Henry Mokono.

PNGDF Business Arm
The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) opened its first business arm company today at their headquarters in Port Moresby. Called the Defence Commercial Incorporated Limited, the company will act as a revenue generator for the PNGDF to sustain its operations.
Church Visas on Hold
Visa for missionaries or volunteers with the Gutnius Lutheran Church have been put on hold by the Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority. Chief Migration Officer Mataio Rabura said in a statement this arrangement would apply "until issues related to their sponsorship and activities in PNG" were resolved by the church.
Tougher Action On Drink Drivers
Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, says the careless driver who hit and killed four girls at Lae's Cassia Crescent must be punished. "I appeal to the Lae Police to make sure that the full force of the law be brought down on these culprits who have brought unnecessary loss of life through their careless behaviour."
Judge Stays Lawyers' Travel Ban
The National Court has stayed the decision by Chief Migration Officer Mataio Rabura to impose a travel ban on two Australian lawyers. Justice Panuel Mogish ordered that Rabura and others, their servants or agents, execute all documents to allow both lawyers to enter the country for the purpose of acting as overseas counsel for their clients until the determination of the judicial review proceedings.
Game on in Waigani
On 4 September 2015, the PNG Supreme Court invalidated the constitutional amendments made by the O'Neill-Dion government in 2013 to extend the 'grace period' for a vote of no confidence against a government from 18 months to 30 months.
Baki Looks at Police Reserves
Police Commissioner Gari Baki says he is looking at re-establishing the police reserve unit in the National Capital District.
"NCDC reservists will be tasked specifically to assist the metropolitan superintendent to police the city, not to go around chasing betel nut sellers. It will be strictly policing. That's basically the way I want it to see it." Baki said there would be some negativity about that but policing was everyone's responsibility
Robber Released Unlawfully
A student, who allegedly robbed a women on a bus, has been released by police with no recommendation from the justice system. The reason for the student's release was because of his exams, but according to the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Division, Steven Yalamu, only the court has the authority to make that decision, and not the police.
Fuel prices in Port Moresby for October have decreased for petrol and increased for diesel and kerosene, according to the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC).
The price of petrol per litre dropped by one toea to K2.87. The price of diesel increased to K2.22 from K2.18, and kerosene went up to K2.11 from K2.09.
Two fresh water "river" sharks have been recently identified in PNG after last being sighted in the 1970's. The river sharks (Carcharhinidae: Glyphis) are a relatively poorly known group of sharks with patchy distributions in tropical rivers and coastal regions of the Indo-West Pacific.
Goroka Airport Upgrade
The National Airport Corporation (NAC) has embarked on a rigorous airport upgrade program signing an K82 million contract for the upgrade of the Goroka Airport in Eastern Highlands province.
LNG Wealth Distribution Concerns
US oil giant ExxonMobil has voiced concern that PNG landholders are failing to receive their due benefits from the $US19 billion ($26 billion) PNG liquefied natural gas project and has vowed to do all it can to encourage a speedy resolution of the problem, which risks disrupting production.

A communication professional from the Autonomous Bougainville Government has completed an internship with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, saying the experience will help him to inform Bougainvilleans on the implementation process of the Bougainville Peace Agreement.
Kabwum Supports Cadet Pilot
The Kabwum District Authority has put forward a total of K100,000 as initial payments for trwo young cadet pilots from Morobe's Kabwum district have been supported to undergo cadet training in New Zealand. Morobe's Kabwum district is one of the many districts within the province, which rely on air transport as a channel to the city, and the district aims to develop its human resources to solve this challenge.
Kokoda Trail Hike
Former Canterbury Bulldogs player Rhys Jack will hike the Kokoda Trail with his rugby league legend father in memory of his great-grandfather. When Private Albert Verhaeghe returned from serving in Papua New Guinea in World War II he was a changed man.
Madang Fire Awareness
The Fire Service in Madang has been carrying out a campaign to educate people about fire hazards during the dry period. Provincial Fire Service manager Robert Wandokun said the campaign themed "Make your home fire safe" began in August.

Peter O'Neill and Malcolm Turnbull met on the eve of the Australian NRL grand final and the two were also photographed together at the event. Mr Turnbull is the fourth Australian Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has dealt with since 2011. Mr O'Neill invited Mr Turnbull to visit Port Moresby at a time of his convenience.

The National Capital District Commission police reservists have been assigned on policing operations in the city, Metropolitan Supt Benjamin Turi says.
Pay Air Niugini Later
Air Niugini has implemented a new payment method, "Pay later" in all domestic sales offices which allows customers to make a booking online at -- http://www.airniugini.com.pg -- and then pay at a local sales office within 48 hours of making the booking. The pay later payment system is available in all Air Niugini retail sales offices throughout the country. It's not applicable to ANG's International Sales Offices or agents.
Kenu and Kundu Festival
PREPARATIONS for the 12th National Kenu and Kundu Festival has received a K100,000 boost from the Milne Bay provincial government. Governor Titus Philemon presented the money to festival chairman Henry Benoma and challenged the committee to stage a bigger and better show this year, despite many hurdles. Philemon assured the committee that K50,000 would be given to them soon.
Children Dying of Hunger
Villagers say children in remote areas of the country are dying as a result of food shortages caused by frost and worsening drought. The PNG government has pledged to provide emergency relief funds to affected areas, but was warned the situation on the ground could get worse.
