Gun Purchase Denied

The Speaker of Parliament, Theo Zurenuoc, denies the purchase of bought 32 guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition for parliament. Mr Zurenuoc says parliament does not need guns. "As head of the parliament, to fix up security systems in parliament, I have never considered the purchased of any firearms whatsoever."

Raft Crosser Rescued

A man attempting to sail from PNG to Australia on a raft made of twigs and sticks has been rescued after being washed up in mangroves on Saibai Island in the Torres Strait, a treacherous stretch of water that lies between the two countries.

Free Education

The head of a privately-funded think tank in Papua New Guinea says development assistance and time are needed for the government to reach its target of free education for all pupils.

Cervical Cancer Survey

A large-scale survey of cervical cancer will be launched later this month in PNG, where more than 1,500 women die of the disease each year.

Ipatas Cup

The Ipatas Cup Eastern challenge scheduled to be played in Goroka had to be played in Lae due to continuous violence in Goroka. Twelve teams from Goroka have been battling for the top spot to qualify for the Northern Challenge to be staged in Madang.

Taskforce Sweep

Thieves have ransacked one of Taskforce Sweep's offices in Port Moresby, stealing computers and possibly files detailing its investigations. Radio Australia reports that in the early hours of the morning, around 20 men jumped over the high fence surrounding the building that houses the Department of Justice in Port Moresby. They tied up three security guards, prized open the heavy steel gate that's supposed to protect the buildings entrance, and then smashed through a wooden door into the Taskforce's administration office.

US Aid

The United States of America via its US Agency for International Development has given PNG Red Cross 50,000 US dollars to support disaster relief efforts in Morobe and Oro provinces.

PNG could reap K80.1 billion annually, six times current levels, by 2030 because of an anticipated growth in global demand for its resources.

No Confidence Vote

PNG Parliament has voted to extend a ban on votes of no confidence to 30 months into a government's five-year term. The bill passed into law in PNG's single House of Parliament on the 4th of Feb with a vote of 90 to 14, well above the 74 votes needed to make the constitutional change.

The opposition has vowed to launch a legal challenge to the constitutional change which increases the grace period protecting a newly-elected Prime Minister from a no-confidence vote.

Budget Deficit Funding

The Treasury Minister, Don Polye, has said the government will borrow up to K2.6 billion both domestically and internationally to fill the deficit in the 2013 budget. The government anticipates raising K1.6 billion locally while looking overseas for the remainder of the budget shortfall.

Ferry Disaster Anniversary

On the first anniversary of PNG's worst maritime disaster, families of the victims say they are still looking for answers. At least 140 people died when the Rabaul Queen passenger ferry sank in rough seas off the country's north coast on the 2nd of February 2012.

Fishermen Return Home

Exam Results Re-examined

Final results for students in schools implicated in the Grade 12 examination cheating scandal have been reprocessed, Education secretary Luke Taita said.
However, certificates and results of students identified for cheating will be withheld until investigations are completed.

Tennis

PNG born Abigail Tere-Apisah has the potential to be the next big thing in tennis. She is currently attending Georgia State University (GSU) in the USA majoring in exercise science. The head coach for women's tennis at GSU has described Abigail as one of the more talented players on the tennis team.

Maritime Safety

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in conjunction with the PNG Government have signed a loan worth $41.5 million to fund the Maritime and Waterways Safety Project which will help improve navigational aids, allowing ships to travel more safely through PNG's largely unchartered and often unsafe waters.

ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth and regional integration.
