PNG Doctors to Assess Somare
The government will send a medical team to Singapore to assess the health of Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and his ability to continue as the country's leader.
Family Wants Sir Michael to Resign
The family of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare want him to tender his resignation from the top job due to ill health. The announcement was made by his son Arthur at a press conference in Port Moresby. Somare underwent heart surgery in Singapore earlier this year. Since then his family has continually denied reports that he was seriously ill. The suggestion to resign comes just days after an affidavit surfaced in which he blamed Rio Tinto for starting the Bougainville war. If Sir Michael takes up the suggestion it will bring to an end a career spanning nearly 50 years and will potentially leave PNG politics in a state of flux.
The announcement has stirred debate and argument in PNG, with many feeling the decision is not one the family can make on Sir Michael's behalf.
Family not consulted -- http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20110701/news02.htm
Theresia Kumo, the director of the Sir Michael's media unit, says reports the prime minister had resigned were incorrect. She said Sir Michael's family was simply stating their position on his future to the public, and added that Sir Michael is still PNG's leader.
