The Government has proposed a new minimum wage of just over K100 per week. The new propsed minimum for an 88 hour fortnight will be K201.60 compared with the current amount of K74.40.

A fire has destroyed the Best Buy supermarket in Lae, Morobe provonce. This was the site of the historical Burns Philip store - an icon of Lae for many years. The liquor store was one of the last sections to go up in flames so many onlookers took advanatge of the situation to loot the store. It didn't matter if the beer was not cold and some of the bottles were hot from the flames.

A landslide 2 kilometres away from Barrick Gold Corp's Kainantu mine has killed at least 10 people. Three people have been pulled alive from the mud unleashed by heavy rains. The slide also destroyed miners' accommodation at an exploration camp. It is feared that others are still buried alive under the debris. An Australian team has flown in to help lead the search for survivors.
