A research intern working for the Wildlife Conservation Society has completed the first study of a rare egg-laying mammal called the long-beaked echidna. A minimum wage determination has been announced by the Chairman of the Minimum Wages Board, Pex Avosa. The minimum wage for a 44 hour week will become K1.14 an hour and after a 40 week transition period this will then move to K2.29 an hour. This equates to just over K200 a fortnight. The board will have the determination gazetted with the dates the changes become effective.

Not only has the price of fuel dropped the price of rice has now dropped by as much as 35 toea a kilogram. Trukai has given its major distributors and wholesalers an 8 per cent reduction in the price of Roots Rice and expects this to be passed on to the end user. As is often the case the morgue at Port Moresby General Hospital is overcrowded. The National Capital District Commission has assured the hospital that it will assist to conduct a mass burial once a list of the unclaimed bodies has been put out in a public notice so that relatives are given a chance to remove the bodies for a more formal burial.

Yet again passage along the Highlands Highway has been severed. This time it was blocked by trucks sliding off the road due to the wet weather near Mata in the Chimbu Province. The highway was impassable in both directions. Initial attempts by road contractors to fix the situation were thwarted by the continuing inclement weather.
