Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth about 45 to 47 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.google.com

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Sean Dorney

After many years in the country, Sean Dorney is leaving for Brisbane with his wife, Pauline, to take up the position of South Pacific correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Sean said the following "One of the really encouraging things - and I have said this quite a number of times before - is that the media in Papua New Guinea today is stronger, and more dynamic and broader than it was in 1975 - just before independence."

"In 1975, when I was here, you basically had the Post-Courier and the National Broadcasting Commission (or what had been the ABC) and that was it."

"Now you've got EMTV, Nau FM, two competing daily newspapers (Post-Courier and The National) and you have a weekly English language newspaper (The Independent)"

Mr Dorney noted that there had been a real growth and strengthening of the media in PNG.

He said: "A lot of people talk about all the negatives about PNG, but I think one of the things Papua New Guinea can teach the rest of the world is how a media in a developing country can develop."

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

It's official the CPI rate has been calculated at something around 6.5per cent for the September quarter. However experts are predicting that inflation would surpass the budgeted figure of 11.5 per cent despite the low official figure. What's that about lies and statistics?!
