** Languages of PNG **
The languages of PNG number over 850. These languages are spoken by the inhabited tribal groups of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. In 2006, then Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare stated that "Papua New Guinea has 832 living languages (languages, not dialects)" making it the most linguistically diverse place on earth. Its official languages are Tok Pisin, English, Hiri Motu and PNG Sign Language. Tok Pisin, an English-based creole, is the most widely spoken, serving as the country's lingua franca. PNG Sign Language became the fourth official language in May 2015, and is used by the deaf population throughout the country.

The current PNG population is 8,317,369 as of Friday, November 24, 2017, based on the latest United Nations estimates.
The PNG population is equivalent to 0.11% of the total world population.
PNG ranks number 101 in the list of countries (and dependencies) by population.
The population density is 18 per Km2 (47 people per mi2).
The total land area is 452,860 Km2 (174,850 sq. miles). 12.6 % of the population is urban (1,039,693 people in 2017). The median age is 21.8 years.

** Chinese Donates to APEC **
The Chinese Government has given K20 million to the Government to maintain the international convention centre which will be used for the 2018 APEC Summit.
The multi-million kina Chinese-aided International Convention Centre project in Port Moresby was funded and built by the Chinese Government.

** Refugees Escorted Out **
One refugee was “escorted out” by government officials while 49 “left voluntarily” early yesterday morning as a police-led government team stormed into the decommissioned Manus regional processing centre. Police Commissioner Gari Baki said the 50 asylum seekers were “peacefully relocated” to the two new camps in East Lorengau.

Australia’s new Foreign Policy White Paper recognises Papua New Guinea as a very unique country, Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Rimbink Pato said yesterday.
Mr Pato said that the 2017 foreign policy unveiled yesterday comprises eight chapters, one of which speaks about a shared agenda for security and prosperity in the Pacific, including an enduring partnership with Papua New Guinea.

** Prisoners Escape **
Thirty-nine inmates have broken out of the Kerevat Prison in East New Britain. Kerevat police station commander John Hapot in Gazelle, East New Britain said they dug holes from four cells to get out of the cell block, then cut through the prison fence to make their getaway.

The Governor of the Eastern Highlands has been asked to talk to the Goroka Town Council about handing over the management of the water supply to Water PNG.

** Shortwave **
The Government plans to improve communication and the dissemination of information to the provinces using the shortwave radio network, says Communication, Information Technology and Energy Minister Sam Basil. “Shortwave is the way to go in PNG and we must not be moved by people who want us to support them put up FM stations,” he said.

** PNG Climate **
The main variable of PNG's climate is not temperature or air pressure, but rainfall. PNG's climate can be described as tropical climate, with the coastal plains averaging a temperature of 28°C, the inland and mountain areas averaging 26°C, and the higher mountain regions, 23°C. The area's relative humidity is quite high, and ranges between 70 and 90 percent.

** Manus Update **
The Australian Government is aware that all men previously refusing to leave the former Manus Island Regional Processing Centre (RPC) have now departed the complex for alternative accommodation. The Australian Government welcomes this development. The PNG Government has been clear since mid-2016 that it would close the RPC.

** Disciplined Forces Training Ends **
The Public Order Management Tactical Trainer Qualifying program between the three discipline forces in the country and Australian Federal Police including New Zealand Police has officially ended at the McGregor Police Barracks. The purpose of the training was to teach officers crowd control especially rioting situations.
