News Items

Police Ambushed

Two policemen have been killed in a daring ambush near Mendi in the Southern Highlands Province. Another policeman is in critical condition in hospital and two teachers are missing following an attack at the Angule Bridge. The five people, three policemen and two teachers, all based in Koroba, Hela Province, were heading towards Mendi when another vehicle pulled up alongside the police vehicle and sprayed bullets on the occupants, killing two instantly.

The bodies of the two policemen have been taken to the Goroka funeral home in the Eastern Highlands Province.

Refugee Found Dead

A Sri Lankan refugee who was being detained by Australia on Manus has been found dead. The Tamil man, 32, died in a suspected suicide after receiving treatment for mental illness, refugee advocates said. Nine detainees have died since 2013 - including six at the Manus centre, which is due to close this month.

Nautilus Provides Update

Nautilus Minerals has provided an update on its operations. It has disclosed, the Company requires significant additional funding in order to complete the build and deployment of the seafloor production system to be utilized at the Solwara 1 Project by the Company and its joint venture partner (as to 15%), the Independent State of PNG's nominee.

Trukai Hulling Mill

Trukai Industries has opened a new hulling mill at its main operations base in Mataram Street, Lae, Morobe province. The mill opening marks a critical step in establishing Trukai's holistic paddy-to-plate value chain, which connects commercial quantities of locally grown rice with PNG consumers via a 100% fully integrated domestic production process.

Morobe NID Office

The National Identification (NID) Registry office in Lae is currently operating with only one machine to register the citizens of Morobe. The Provincial Registrar for Morobe, Keputong Geibob, said this in a response to Lae's Councillor's concern on the slow processing of the NID cards.

Adventist Family Violence Project

A professor at Avondale College, a Seventh-day Adventist school in Australia, and his students are partnering with the Adventist Church and its humanitarian agency to address family violence in PNG.

Voco Point Police Post

The Voco Point Police Post in Lae, set on fire earlier this year, has been reopened for operation. The Wong Tim and Company rebuilt it after it was set on fire by youths from a nearby settlement in the area.

National Trade Policy

Launched in early August, the National Trade Policy (NTP) 2017-32 sets out guidelines for the country's trading future, with a strategic implementation plan, currently in draft form, set to follow. Under the NTP, PNG will set out to establish a policy framework and clear vision aimed at steering the country towards a competitive, export-driven economy, built on and supported by an expanding domestic market.

Pala Questions Gure's Win

Former Rigo MP, Ano Pala, is disputing the win of Lekwa Gure in the 2017 national elections in the court of disputed returns. Pala has filed a petition alleging two counts of bribery against Gure and grounds of errors and omissions against the Electoral Commission. This was during the scrutiny process at the Kwikila counting hall.

World Ozone Day

To mark world Ozone day, the first 'Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technical Skills Challenge' was held recently at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby. The participating teams included Port Moresby Technical Institute and Don Bosco Technical and companies such as Daikin PNG, South Pacific Air Conditioning and others.

PNG Power Limited (PPL) is clamping down on electricity theft by carrying out a disconnection exercise in the National Capital District and moving on to other provincial centres.

PPL has a system loss of 23 percent: 11 percent of which comes from non-technical losses or illegal connections.

Exxon Mobil

ExxonMobil PNG Limited is operator of the PNG LNG joint venture which includes affiliates of Oil Search, Santos, Kumul Petroleum, JX Nippon and Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC).

ExxonMobil has been marketing petroleum fuels and other refined products in PNG since 1922, and today accounts for just over 35 percent of the market.

Human Rights Film Festival

The PNG Human Rights Film Festival is set run from the 13th of October through to the 15th at the Moresby Arts Theatre in Port Moresby. It will also be held from the 9th to the 11th of October at the Mark Solon Auditorium (MSA) at the University of Goroka, Eastern Highlands. Other places that the PNG Human Rights Film Festival will visit, apart from Port Moresby and Goroka, are Madang and Buka.

Melanesia Basketball Cup

Former Cairns Marlins guard Joel Khalu has coached PNG to a gold medal at the FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup held in Port Moresby. As a result of the tournament, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea have earned qualification through to the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. It's just the latest in a long list of accolades for Khalu who won three Queensland Basketball League championships in nine years with the Marlins.
