Townsville Australia

Air Niugini has commenced flights to Townsville in the north of Queensland, Australia. Airline chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, said he was confident that Air Niugini's direct service would increase quickly.

Air Niugini will operate its Townsville flights on Monday and Friday, departing Port Moresby at 9.55am and arriving in Townsville at 11.45am. The return flight will depart Townsville at 12.30pm and arrive in Port Moresby at 2.20pm.





K3.1 Billion Road Loan

The Highlands Highway is one of five major roads to be upgraded "to world-class standard" using the K3.14 billion ($US1bil) loan from the Asian Development Bank. The others are the Madang-Ramu Road, Sepik Highway, Buluminski Highway and New Britain Highway.

Exxon Updates

Exxon Mobil Corporation is the operator of the PNG LNG facility through Exxon Mobil PNG Limited, which owns 33.2% of the $19 billion USD venture. The oil & gas giant also owns a material stake in the various gas fields that will supply this LNG development, and possibly other LNG projects, for years to come.

Aisoli to Head POMSox

The Port Moresby Stock Exchange board is expected to formalise the appointment of Karen Aisoli as the general manager for POMSoX. Board director Johnson Kalo said in a recent market release that Aisoli would replace Vincent Ivosa.

SDA's Clean Streets

Thousands of members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church swarmed to the streets recently to clean the streets in preparation for evangelistic meetings. Church members, coming from more than 12 provinces across the nation, have travelled for an evangelistic series and a church gathering at Mt. Hagen City, in the Western Highlands, to take place later this month and in early April.

Tabari Fire Investigations

Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the recent fire at Tabari Place in Boroko, Port Moresby. Acting Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo said the fire at Johnstons Pharmacy and Papindo were not related to the Gutpela Kaikai fast food outlet the day before. He said investigations were still going on but it was possible that arson may have been the cause.

Tabari Ghost Town

The once iconic Tabari Place in the heart of Boroko now looks like a 'ghost town'. Since the fire brought the line of shops to ashes last week, Boroko has been very hard to look at. Opportunists were still rummaging through the ashes without police presence in the area.

Tongan High Commissioner

Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tuku'aho has presented her diplomatic credentials to the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Mr Bob Dadae, KStJ, in Port Moresby. She is now the High Commissioner of Tonga to Papua New Guinea in addition to her duties as High Commissioner of Tonga to Australia.

Manumanu Land Inquiry Stopped

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has told Parliament that the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the Manumanu land deal was halted because of an earlier court order.

Saving PNG Coffee

A University of Florida (UF) professor is helping to prevent tiny insects from harming coffee plants in PNG. Jiri Hulcr, a UF forest resources and conservation professor, started a partnership in 2014 with the Coffee Industry Corporation branch of Papua New Guinea's government to help identify the beetle, called the coffee berry borer. The country discovered its first infestation the first week of March, Hulcr said.

The University of Papua New Guinea's new K600 graduation fee has caused outrage among graduating students. Phylma Timea, a graduating student from the Journalism and Public Relations strand, says it's unfair on them and their parents.

Foreign Missions Settled

Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary William Bill Dihm says the financial situation at the country's foreign missions is well under control and they are managing in a tight situation. Dihm told The National newspaper that the K4.5 million recently released by the Finance Department was part of the quarterly allocations and was cleared by the central bank and disbursed to all overseas missions.

Loser's Coach Questions Rules

The coach of the runner up in the Australian Athletics Championships has questioned the rules after his runner managed to come second to PNG's Toea Wisil in the women's 100 metre final. Toea, while eligible to compete, is not an Australian citizen and was seen by the runner ups coach as depriving the Aussie of a National Championship.

Missionary Escapes Pirate Attack

A Fijian missionary who survived a pirate attack in Milne Bay waters recently has described a slick operation run by a network of people. Sanaila Ravia Kenivale was travelling by boat to an island in PNG's south when it was held up by men armed with guns and knives.

Nautilus Minerals' Seafloor Production

Nautilus Minerals has announced that the Company's Seafloor Production Tools have arrived in PNG, and will shortly commence submerged trials. The submerged trials will happen in an existing facility on Motukea Island, near Port Moresby in PNG.

The electoral commissioner has been forced to reassure church leaders he is not asking the country's Governor-General to evoke an apocalyptic biblical prophecy. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato said church leaders were worried when they read a newspaper report saying PNG's Governor-General would sign 666 writs for the upcoming national elections.

Pilots to File Documents

The Supreme Court has adjourned an appeal by eight Air Niugini pilots regarding their termination to allow time for their lawyer to file necessary court documents. Justice Colin Makail adjourned the appeal to the 1st if May to allow the pilots' lawyer, Moses Murray, to prepare a consolidated appeal book which would contain all the documents needed for prosecution.

Pacific Towing Regatta

The Pacific Towing Regatta competition took place over a recent weekend at the Ela Beach in the nation's capital, Port Moresby. The event hosted by the PNG Canoeing Association was the first race of 2017, with similar events to be held throughout the year.

Caritas Opens Technical School

After the first missionary work in PNG (Araimiri Don Bosco, Kerema diocese in 1986) the Caritas Sisters opened the Caritas Secondary Technical Girls School in East Boroko, Port Moresby in 1996. Twenty years later the courageous missionary sisters have now opened another missionary frontier in the diocese of Kimbe, East New Britain. After a few years of negotiations and busy preparations, the two founders, Sr. Sara Park and Sr. Florentina Cho, settled in Kimbe in early December 2016.

Dual Citizenship

The PNG Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority will be charging high fees for PNG and dual citizenship because it is a naturalisation process, an official says. National Elections

Chairman of the Inter-department election committee, Isaac Lupari, has expressed confidence that the 2017 national election would be far better than previous elections. Lupari, who is also the Chief Secretary, said the nation had less than 20 days left to go to the polls and the committee was doing its best to make this the best election.
