The National newspaper has reported the new parties are the Paradise Kingdom Party, the PNG First Party, the Model Nation Party, the Trust PNG Party, the PNG Youths Party, the Nations Interest Party, the PNG Socialist Party, the Wantoks in Godly Services Party and the Papua New Guinea Human Rights Party.

Wewak Market

PNG Fisheries Industry Association president Sylvester Pokajam is concerned about the condition of Wewak town's market. He said the construction of the facility came about because of fishing deals between Japan and PNG through the National Fisheries Authority when he was the managing director in 2006.

Opposition Leader Don Polye has warned his political opponents to stop using 'me as a political commodity for your personal gain.' Bloomberg are reporting that 62-year-old geologist Peter Botten is seeking to engineer a US$5 billion deal that would confirm the emerging status of Papua New Guinea as one of the world's most lucrative gas exporters.

Melanesian Basketball Cup

The FIBA Melanesian Basketball Cup will see the best teams from the region battle it out for their chance at glory by claiming the coveted Melanesian Cup and earning their spot in the Pacific Games Basketball Tournament.

The FIBA Melanesian Basketball Cup is one of the three new Oceania sub-zone competitions comprising of the Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian regions. Papua New Guinea will play host to Fiji, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu from the 24th of September to the 1st of October, 2017.

Hungry Prisoners

More than 170 inmates in a PNG jail have been without food for several days after the company contracted to supply them with food cancelled its services. The Post Courier Newspaper reported concerned guards at the Baisu jail in Mt Hagen had used their own money to buy food for inmates from the local market.

Telikom - Bmobile Vodafone and PNG DataCo

Telikom, bmobile Vodafone and PNG DataCo are to be merged under Telikom, according to the acting Minister for Public Investment and State Enterprises, Charles Abel. The new entity will operate under a single board which will be headed by Telikom's current chairman, Mahesh Patel, with representation from the previous boards of bmobile and DataCo.

PNG is in arrears in the payment of their financial contributions under the terms of Article 19 of United Nation Charter.

Strong demand for seats on the soon-to-be launched direct service between Townsville and Port Moresby comes as no surprise to Air Niugini. Network planner for Air Niugini David Glover said the airline wanted to take advantage of Townsville's wide catchment area.

University of Goroka

The University of Goroka (UOG) is looking at modernising the institution by expanding the facilities, recruiting senior lectures and introducing new departments to capture the high number of students. UOG Chancellor, Joseph Sukwainomb, revealed the University's intention during the opening of the 2017 orientation week whilst celebrating the institution's 20th anniversary.

Jackson's Upgrade

The National Airport Corporation is embarking on major improvements at the Port Moresby International Airport. Acting managing director Richard Yopo announced that paid parking at the Airport car parks will be introduced in the second quarter of 2017 and an Airport Bus operation is planned to commence at the same time.

USAID Medical Care

The US Government through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is raising the capacity to provide medical care in PNG. Wewak

Australia's P&O cruise ship Pacific Aria carrying almost 2000 passengers has visited the coastal town of Wewak on the northern tip of PNG. Over 640 tourists booked land tours dubbed the "Wewak Highlights" with local operator Sepik Adventure Tours. Others took private tours of this scenic coastal township.

Kimbe Police Cells

West New Britain Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Superintendent Jim Namora, says the provincial health inspectors had given the police a 28-day ultimatum to refurbish the lockup facilities or face legal actions. Due to this West New Britain Police will no longer be arresting suspects and detaining them at the Police cell. PPC Namora says for now, he has ordered his men to refrain from arresting lawbreakers until the problem is fixed.

The East Sepik council of chiefs has performed a traditional ceremony marking the start of the preparation for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare's exit from politics. The council of chiefs was formed to make preparations to farewell the founding prime minister in traditional rituals and ceremonies.

Vale Sir Michael Ogio

The ninth PNG Governor General, Sir Michael Ogio passed away on Saturday 18th of Feb at the age of 75. The island nations vice-regal had been dealing with illness for some time, and had just returned to the island after receiving medical treatment in Australia, with the official cause of death listed as liver, kidney and cardiopulmonary failure.

Unpaid LNG Royalty Protest

Villagers are blockading the country's biggest resources project because the government has not paid them long overdue royalties. Hundreds of people who live near the PNG liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant outside Port Moresby have gathered around the main gate in an attempt to block access.

Asia Pacific Telecommunity Meeting

Papua New Guinea was one 15 countries that attended the second Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) preparatory meeting which was held in Port Moresby recently. The conference was hosted by the National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA) to discuss issues of interest in the region, as it prepares for the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2017 (WTDC-17).

PNG Foreign Company Debt

The New Zealand Foreign Minister has gone into bat for New Zealand companies contracting to the Papua New Guinea Government but who are not being paid. At least one New Zealand company, Evaluation Consult, has an unpaid debt dating back to 2014.

The debt has since been verified by the PNG courts and while the company has been given a cheque this cannot be cleared for lack of government funds.
