Miss PNG 2016

Kellyanne Limbiye - a University of PNG student has been crowned Miss PNG (2016). 23 year old Limbiye, a final-year political science student, was also judged winner of the sarong wear and talent categories.

First runner-up was Miss Queen Emma Chocolates Lois Doules Ilave, second runner-up was Miss International Training Institute (ITI) Rose Lakoro Pitoi and the third runner-up Miss Pacific Balanced Fund (PBF), Melody Leke.

Activist Receives Award

Paul Palosualrea Pavol of New Britain has won the Alexander Soros Foundation's Award for Environmental and Human Rights Activism.

APEC 2018

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says investment in security to be provided for world leaders attending the APEC summit in Port Moresby in 2018 will make PNG safer and provide long-term security benefits.

PNG Weather

Bad weather in PNG has been reported as being responsible for seven deaths in Morobe province. In Chimbu province roads have been disrupted and are waiting repair. The provincial administrator, Joe Kunda Naur, says key trunk roads from Kundiawa to Gumine and to Gembogl have been disrupted by landslips.

Alwin Komolong Honoured

As a senior player with Norse in Kentucky, Alwin Komolong from PNG, has been honoured during the pregame festivities with a plaque and an honorary jersey.

Komolong spent three years with the Norse, coming to NKU in 2014 after playing a year of college soccer in the NAIA. He was also a member of the PNG National Team during Olympic Qualifiers in the summer of 2015.





PNG Defender Joins Canterbury United

PNG international Felix Komolong has signed for Canterbury United to bolster the Dragons' defence. Komolong is no stranger to New Zealand, having studied at Auckland's King's College where he starred for the first XI.

Goju-Ryu Karate

An early enlistment in the army with the Royal Ordinance Corps before independence and then a stint as a cook at the University of Technology in Lae has not stopped Luke Goa from developing a passion for Goju-Ryu Karate. Goju-Ryu is what is called a "hard-soft" style blending ancient Chinese style of fighting with traditional Japanese styles. Luke Goa is the most senior Goju-Ryu karate practitioner in PNG.

PNG Cricket Win

PNG has put up another clinical performance with both bat and ball to beat Namibia by six wickets on Sunday (October 23) in the World Cricket League at the Amini Park in Port Moresby. They now join Netherlands at the top of the table with 12 points after their sixth win on the trot.

Women Work Achievements

A number of PNG women have been honoured for their work achievements and leadership skills, in a country where gender inequality is rife. Overall winner for 2016 was Bosa Togs.

The other winners included
Dorothy Lamin Koch-Waluta who was awarded the Steamships Not for Profit award; Rita Awesa, awarded the SP Brewery Entrepreneur award; Annastascia Wanasawo with the Trukai Community award; Julienne Leka-Maliaki with the Moore Printing Sports award; Jacqueline Joseph with the IBBM Young Achievers Award; and Dr Lutty Amos with the Pacific Assurance Public Sector Award.

Coke Faces Challenge

Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Simotas has questioned Coca-Cola Amatil's plans to increase prices to combat rising sugar prices.

Pacific Foam and Colorpak Limited have hosted a trade show night at the Lae International Hotel amidst uncertain economic times. The mini trade fair was to display the company's ability to provide new products to for a dynamic consumer market.

Petroleum and Energy Summit

PNG will host its first ever Petroleum and Energy Summit in 2017. The event is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and PNG's oil and gas company-Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited.

Twilight Basketball

The Basketball Federation (BFPNG) has recently hosted their first-ever Twilight Basketball session at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Centre (TAIC) in Port Moresby. Twilight Basketball is a brand new Hoops for Health (H4H) project, which is being delivered under the national federation's community engagement strategy.

YWAM Medical Ships

YWAM Medical Ships have had great success over their last seven years of operation in PNG. During this year alone, over 30,000 people living in 171 remote villages have benefitted from collaborative patrols in rural areas says YWAM Medical Ship Managing Director Ken Mulligan during a short inspection on the MV YWAM and the new patrol tender which was an addition of the second extended-range patrol tender.

Crown Plaza Security Terminated

Crown Plaza internal security personal have gone on strike after they were laid off by the Crown Plaza Hotel management. According to one of the internal security personal and team leader Teine Sugoro, there was no formal notice being issued before the termination.

Archbishop and newly appointed Cardinal Sir John Ribat has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (KBE) for service to the community and the Catholic Church as Archbishop of Port Moresby and for promoting harmony.

PNG police are undergoing bomb detection training in preparation for next month's FIFA Under 20 World Cup, which is being held in Port Moresby.

Missionary Kid to Pilot

Thomas Kimbun Keindip grew up as a missionary kid at the Lutheran mission headquarters in Ampo in Lae. At the end of each year he and his siblings were able to fly to Komba in the Kabwum District of Morobe Province on small planes. The interest in flying grew from there until he was able to become a pilot being trained at the Missionary Aviation Flight School in Mt. Hagen.

He is now chief pilot at North Coast Aviation (NCA).

According to Ms Mary Morola, Secretary for the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) the PNG Minimum Wage currently stands at K3.50 per hour. She emphasised that for people with skills and or experience, they should be paid at a rate higher than the minimum.

UPNG Lifts Student Ban

The University of PNG has lifted a ban it imposed on a group of student leaders from entering campus and attending classes. The student leaders were advised about the decision. The students were members of the Student Representative Council.

Air Niugini Phone Ban

The National Airline, Air Niugini, has banned the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on all Air Niugini flights, effective immediately. This includes shipping the phone as cargo.

New Asylum Centre

The PNG Government has said construction will start soon on a new detention facility for asylum seekers being sent back to their country of origin. The PNG Immigration and Citizenship Advisory Service says the facility will be built near the Bomana jail outside the capital Port Moresby, close to the country's only international airport.

Openly Gay Man Slayed

LGBTI community members in PNG are seeking a thorough police investigation of the death of an openly gay man who allegedly was killed by a relative.

PNG Drought

The World Food Programme announced that it has concluded its food distributions in Papua New Guinea, having reached over 246,000 people in the highlands as well as Western and Milne Bay Provinces. These areas are recovering from the most severe El Niño-related drought in decades.
