Independence 16 September

After being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975. Elections in 1972 resulted in the formation of a ministry headed by Chief Minister Michael Somare, who pledged to lead the country to self-government and then to independence. PNG became self-governing on December 1, 1973 and achieved independence on September 16, 1975.

Village Toilet Project

Manly Rotary and District 9685 are partnering with Friends Of Rambutso Inc to run workshops for villagers on the build, use and repair of composting toilets to improve health, gender, social outcomes.

PNG is going backwards. Despite significant international funding allotted to PNG for water, sanitation and hygiene combined - through the global WASH initiative - in percentage terms fewer people in PNG today have access to sanitation than 20 years ago.

Browne Plays in Europe

David Browne, the son of cartoonist Bob Browne, has been drawing his own path in football since the day he started playing. From humble beginnings, living in the Kaugere suburb of Port Moresby, he has gone on to become the first PNG footballer to play professionally in Europe after he signed for Dutch Eredivisie team, PEC Zwolle last year.
