Swire Ups PNG Coverage
Swire Shipping is launching a monthly direct call to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea from New Zealand and Fiji, with effect from May 4, 2016.
Malaria in Madang
According to the Madang town clinic there were 471 malaria patients in the month of February this year in Madang.
Protest Ban In Capital
Police banned any protest march at the resumption of parliament in Port Moresby. This comes amid plans by a number of groups, including the Voice of Melanesia, to stage a peaceful march on parliament.
No Zika in PNG
The PNG Health Department says there is no Zika virus outbreak though there were confirmed cases of Zika virus.
Kidu Sues Film Company
Carol Kidu is suing independent Sydney film house Media Stockade she says seriously misrepresented her role in a Port Moresby property stoush. Worse, she says, the filmmakers secured her involvement in their documentary, as well as Australian government funding for it, under false pretences.
Homo Sapien History
Scientists have discovered that Homo sapiens - that's us - made more babies with the archaic human like species than first thought. Researchers have analysed DNA sequences from 35 people living on Northern Island Melanesia, off the coast of PNG. These Melanesians were found to have about 2 percent Neanderthal ancestry, plus an additional genetic contribution of about 2 to 4 per cent from Denisovans.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's Peoples National Congress Party (PNC) has raised over 6 million kina at the party's fundraising dinner held recently at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby.
PNG LNG Rated Highly
According to Ben Micah, Petroleum and Energy Minister, liquefied natural gas from PNG is rated very highly.
Koiari LLG School
Kailaki Primary School, a remote school in the Koiari LLG of Central Province, has received a new double classroom funded by the provincial government at a cost of K150,000.
Solomon Islands Football
The PNG men's football team has headed of the Solomon Islands for two friendly soccer matches. After the short stint by the team in the Solomon Islands, they will then prepare for a match against Korea on the 5th of May.
Man Shot By Police
It has been reported that a man in his early 20s, from Southern Highlands province, was shot and injured by a group of men on the Magi Highway, just outside of Port Moresby recently. It is alleged that the group of men are police officers.
Expensive PNG Property
Property in PNG especially in the National Capital can be expensive. PNG has one of the most unusual land law systems in the world. Upon attaining independence in 1975, virtually all land in PNG was placed under customary ownership. It is estimated that some 97 percent of land in Papua New Guinea remains customary land. These figures are relatively unique to Melanesia, with Vanuatu holding approximately 98 percent of its land under customary title, and Fiji holding 90 percent.
As such, the value of the tiny amount of alienated land that exists in PNG has skyrocketed. Property prices for non-customary land are exorbitantly high in PNG, with house prices currently hovering around USD$510,000.
A recently completed K11.6 million roadwork project in Arawa employed local contractors and created local jobs. The resealing of town roads in Arawa complements other works in the area supported by Australia including four other roads in Arawa in 2012 and from Arakawau into Arawa, about 25km in total.
The PNG Opposition has launched a new attempt to unseat the country's Government, the third time it has sought to hold a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister since October last year. The PNG Government has labelled the motion a "waste of time".
Govt's Priorities Questioned
PNG's registrar of Political Parties, Alphonse Gelu, has questioned the government's method of prioritising legislation before the parliament. Dr Gelu said he was frustrated legislation he helped develop to revise the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates had not made it onto parliament's agenda before the 2017 election.
Kina Petroleum Limited has announced that it will exit exploration license PPL 337 in PNG after failing to encounter commercial quantities of hydrocarbons. Following the evaluation of drilling results, Kina has concluded that "there is insufficient remaining prospectivity in the license to warrant further exploration work, particularly given the current oil price climate."
Constant Power Blackouts
Constant power blackouts in Papua New Guinea's main cities have been blamed by the prime minister on "human misconduct". The blame is being directed towards staff at PNG Power, amid a nationwide strike by workers over outstanding entitlements.
Girls' Cricket Program
Cricket PNG has officially launched the Girls Empowerment Through (GET) Kriket programme for the year at Amini Park on International Women's Day. The main aim of the GET Kriket programme is to increase female participation in playing hard ball cricket and empower young girls through educational sessions.
Cuts Won't Reduce Health
The PNG health minister has told parliament that public health will not be compromised by cuts of $US16 million dollars to the religious organisations that provide a large part of health services across the country.
Ports Mired in Controversy
The directors of the Ahi and Labu landowner companies in Morobe Province have said "The introduction of a new foreign partner with little or no PNG experience, at the expense of viable majority-owned PNG businesses, is an insult to all Papua New Guineans and contradicts oft-stated government ambitions to increase local participation in our nation's economy," after being excluded from a PNG Ports Corporation tender for terminal services.
PNG Seeks IMF Loan
Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says the country's central bank is trying to borrow $330 million ($US250 million) from the International Monetary Fund to help solve the country's foreign exchange problems. O'Neill said the loan would be used to clear the foreign exchange requests of major fuel and rice companies.
Ok Tedi Loss
It's been revealed, that PNG lost around 2-billion Kina, following the temporary shutdown of Ok Tedi Mine last August.
South Pacific Brewery wants to brew a new cassava-based beer, in a move that could be a boon for farmers in the country.
World's Worst Clean Water Access
PNG, where 60% of the population live without a safe water supply, has the poorest access to clean water in the world, according to a study released to mark World Water Day. A report on the state of the world's water showed Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Chad and Mozambique joining Papua New Guinea in the bottom five of a table ranking countries according to the percentage of households with access to clean water.
There is no turning back. The Croc is going to live in Papua New Guinea and that's that. For its six-year life, the Crocodile Prize has been an evolving and moveable feast. Not quite making it up as it went along but close.
Bmobile-Vodafone has opened another flagship store in Top Town, Lae, located at the Post PNG building complex. Marketing manager Deepak Khanna described the opening as a "big moment" for the company, that was until 2014, struggling to compete with rival Digicel.
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major challenge to public health worldwide. In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that approximately 9.6 million people developed TB globally and about 480,000 were infected with multidrug-resistant TB strains.
Poor living conditions contribute to TB in PNG.
PNG Air Profit
PNG Air has recorded a "significant turnaround" in 2015 with a profit of K4.21 million, according to its report to the Port Moresby Stock Exchange. The airline directors said 2015 was a momentous year for the airline, with its first two new ATR 72-600 aircraft joining the fleet, and the airline re-branded as Papua New Guinea Air.
MP Travel Clampdown
Powes Parkop, governor of Port Moresby, says major savings are unlikely to be achieved as a result of new travel restrictions on civil servants and MPs.
Popondetta Water Woes
Popondetta town in Northern province urgently needs a backup water source to maintain its supply. Water PNG Popondetta Business Centre Manager, Kingsley Waike, confirmed with local TV station - EMTV - that there is only one source, which is the temporary dam that supplies the whole town area.
