Link PNG AOC

Link PNG, a subsidiary of Air Niugini has been presented with a three year Air Operator’s Certificate(AOC) after successfully completing its Air Operator review conducted by Civil Aviation Safety Authority, PNG(CASA PNG).

Link PNG General Manager, Mr Daniel Wanma in receiving the certificate from CASA PNG Director, Mr Wilson Sagati said Link PNG has been able to demonstrate to the regulator its high level of safety standards and compliance, maintaining that safety should be adhered to on a daily basis.

Teacher's Leave Fares

Every year as the end of year rolls along teacher's are worried about getting fares to travel home after spending a year away teaching children. This year appear to be no different. As usual it would seem that the government is struggling to find any money for this necessary part of the pay a teacher should be entitled to. It has been reported that teachers may only receive 70 per cent of what they are entitled to.

Porgera Mine Reopens

The Porgera mine in Enga province has reopened after having to close to conserve water. The operator, Barrick Niugini Limited, says the water levels at the dam at Waile Creek have reached sufficient levels to restart operating the plants.

Porgera Mine Rape Remedy Flawed

A controversial process created by one of the world's largest gold mining companies to compensate women for rapes and gang rapes in PNG was deeply flawed, said human rights investigators and legal experts at Columbia and Harvard Law Schools in a study released recently. The three-year study of Barrick Gold's remedy mechanism at its Porgera gold mine found that the effort to provide packages to 120 rape survivors was flawed from the start and fell far short of international standards.

ICC Intercontinental Cup

Afghanistan and PNG will be aiming to move up to second place in the ICC Intercontinental Cup table when they face-off in the final match of round two on Saturday, 21 November, in pursuit of their dreams for Test status. OPEC-Like Palm Oil Council

Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's top two palm oil producers, signed an agreement Saturday to set up a council for palm oil producing countries in a bid to ensure price stability by managing production and stock in the global market. Membership will be extended to other producers such as Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Uganda.

Kuman: Education In PNG

National Education Minister, Nick Kuman, says that education in Papua New Guinea has progressed over time, since Independence in 1975. Minister Kuman said English will be made compulsory right across all grades.

Drought in PNG

An Australian family has decided to raise money to send to an orphanage in PNG, where the drought crisis has led to a food shortage. Mike Jelliffe, president of the orphanage's management committee, has welcomed the news, adding that they rely on donations to run the centre. Mr Jelliffe said despite some recent rainfall, it would be some time before their crops can grow again.

Another Tokyo Flight

PNG has announced plans to begin operating a second weekly service between its home base in Port Moresby to Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The new service will commence from the 6th of July next year and will use one of the airline's Boeing 737 aircraft.

Indonesian Fishing Vessel Sunk

Following a request by the National Fisheries Authority an Indonesian fishing vessel, found fishing illegally in PNG, has been sunk by members of the Defence Force ordnance disposal unit.

Malaoro Supermarket Burns

The Malaoro Supermarket in Port Moresby has gone up in flames. Two fire units from Boroko and Gerehu rushed to the scene in an attempt to extinguish the fire. It is understood that over K3 million worth of goods was destroyed.

PNG Fire Service NCD Chief Superintendent Commander Akia Koia says investigations into the fire which burned down the Malaoro Supermarket in Port Moresby will begin this week.

Police Detain Vietnamese

Police have detained 13 Vietnamese men they believe were attempting to reach Australia by boat. The men had stopped in Wewak on the north coast of PNG to take sick people to hospital, where police were alerted to their presence.

A woman court magistrate is amongst five other women who were awarded the CPL Pride of Papua New Guinea Awards for Women in Port Moresby. These women were recognised under six unique categories for the various services they are engaged in their communities.

Drought Situation Grim

Recent heavy rain across much of Papua New Guinea's Highlands seems to have done little to ease the severe drought affecting three million people. Several provinces are in the grip of the worst drought in decades because of the current El Niño system affecting much of the Pacific, and agencies dealing with it say the situation is getting even grimmer.

Maternal Care Meeting

Over 200 midwives from across all provinces have gathered in Port Moresby for a two-day meeting on the maternal care services they provide to their communities, as well as the challenges they go through when helping mothers and pregnant women in rural villages.

Multi-Drug Resistance TB

There are growing concerns tuberculosis could become untreatable in Australia after a dramatic increase in the number of drug-resistant tuberculosis cases recorded in Papua New Guinea.

Daru is the epicentre with transmissions of primary cases occurring both on Daru Island and communities along the coastline from Fly River delta to Mabudawan in the West.
