Pacific Games

Over 300 PNG Defence Force soldiers will be engaged in the Pacific Games Security Operations. Army Commander, Gilbert Toropo, said what is important in keeping the peace and security during the Pacific Games is discipline and he expects his men and women to show that during the games security operation.

The police commissioner of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) has assured athletes and visitors attending next month's Pacific Games that they will be safe in Port Moresby. The police will use two Israeli-supplied surveillance balloons to monitor the various games venues and coordinate responses.

Pacific Games on TV

Live coverage of the Pacific Games will be available to viewers in Australia on the National Indigenous Television (NITV) network. NITV will bring audiences all the sporting action when the tournament kicks off from the 4th of July. In two Australian firsts, viewers will be able to catch all the Games' action on free-to-air television and cheer on favourite Pacific athletes as they compete in four sporting areas for the first time.

World Refugee Day

Nigerians Jailed for Drug Smuggling

After the interception of methamphetamines worth over a million New Zealand Dollars, attempted to be smuggled into New Zealand from PNG, four Nigerians and a New Zealander have received long jail terms for their roles in an international drug smuggling ring.

PNG could reallocate as many as 20 of its energy licenses, many of them in the upstream business with major players standing ready to snap them up, the country's minister of petroleum and energy said recently.

Pacific Economic Greening

The Asian Development Bank's energy operations in the Pacific aim to boost energy security, support low-carbon growth and help expand access to modern energy services. For PNG, which is among the largest borrowers from the ADB, the bank said improving the hydropower plants at Port Moresby are among the regional priorities. With most PNG consumers relying on fuel-powered generators, ADB said keeping Port Moresby infrastructure in working order will help reduce fossil fuel consumption.

Illegal Fishing Crackdown

Taiwan and PNG have inked a memorandum of understanding in which the two countries agreed to cooperate in cracking down on illegal fishing. The fishery cooperation deal is the first of its kind between the two countries on fishery management cooperation.

Moody's Update

Moody's Investors Service says that lower commodity prices have adversely affected PNG's government's fiscal balance and the country's external payments position. Revenue has come in under budgeted projections, while the current account's return to a surplus last year has not been sufficient to avert an ongoing fall in foreign currency reserves. In addition to the deterioration of the external payments position and the imposition of currency controls, the public sector has recently incurred more cross-border debt, notably a private sector loan to finance a stake in Oil Search.

Asylum Seekers Join Legal Challenge

Almost a third of the asylum seekers at the Australian-run immigration centre on Manus Island are challenging their detention, after 277 of them were added to an ongoing case in PNG. The case will argue the detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island has breached at least 8 parts of PNG's constitution, including the right to liberty, freedom of movement, information about detention and access to a lawyer.

Geoffrey Vaki Found Guilty

Former police commissioner, Geoffrey Vaki, has been found guilty of contempt for not arresting the country's prime minister on corruption charges. A court has been told Geoffrey Vaki wilfully disobeyed when he refused to arrest the prime minister, Peter O'Neill, in June last year after a PNG anti-corruption taskforce, Sweep, linked him to allegedly fraudulent multimillion-dollar payments by the government to a Port Moresby law firm.

O3b Networks Helps Digicel

O3b Networks is providing additional trunking services to Digicel PNG, the Digicel Group's largest market. Digicel started O3bTrunk services in July 2014, increased the capacity in February 2015, and only three months later increased the capacity again, nearly a 150% increase in data throughput from the initial start of service.
