Trobriand Islands Flights

Link PNG, a subsidiary of Air Niugini, has officially launched a service to Losuia (Kiriwina Island), Milne Bay province on the 25th of April 2015 using its Dash 8 fleet of aircraft. Link PNG had earlier commenced cargo services to the island in March. Kiriwina is part of the Trobriand group of Islands.

Link PNG now flies to 14 destinations around PNG.

Milne Bay

There are numerous dive sites on the north coast of Milne Bay and, apart from Tawali's house reef which is a shore dive, the sites can be separated into three basic groups.

Student Caught Out

A Master's student at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand has had his Master's withdrawn after a investigation of more than a year determined it was more than 90% the same as that of another PNG student attending the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Mining Benefit Share

Deputy Opposition Leader and Bulolo MP, Sam Basil is upset over findings of a National Research Institute Report, into mining activities in his Wau-Bulolo area of Morobe, urging for an immediate review into the 2005 Memorandum of Agreement. The Report highlighted discrepancies in the MOA, with landowners of the Hidden Valley Gold mine missing out on benefits, since its commencement.

The national executive council has approved K23.8 million of which K5.6 million will support emergency response for drug-resistant tuberculosis in National Capital District, Gulf and Western.

SP Brewery has launched a "Don't drink like a fool" campaign to educate drinkers about drinking responsibly. SP Brewery was also committed to developing innovative drink responsibly campaigns and enlisting the support of retailers to reduce harmful and underage drinking.

PNG Hunters

PNG Hunters hierarchy have appealed for help from the Queensland Rugby League amid fears over the expansion club's financial future in the Intrust Super Cup. The Hunters have been a smash hit with Queensland league fans, but the cost of competing is challenging, with the fledgling outfit required to cover travel costs to PNG for all teams.

Epidemiology Training

Sixteen students from 13 provinces are training to be field epidemiologists or disease detectives.

The course is organised and facilitated with technical and financial support from the Department of Health, the World Health Organisation, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Hunter-New England District Population Health and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Singapore SEA Games

A 15-year-old Malaysian track and field athlete competing in the Hammer Throw has a good chance at winning gold at the SEA Games in Singapore. Grace Wong Xiu Mei is the youngest athlete from Malaysia to have qualified. Grace was born in PNG and her mother is from PNG.

Death Penalty 'Under Review'

PM Peter O'Neill has said the death penalty is "under review" after recent global outcry over the execution of foreign drug convicts in neighbouring Indonesia. While the current law allows for execution by lethal injection, hanging, and firing squad, no death row convicts have been executed due to a lack of infrastructure.

Police Chief Axed

The Commander of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary has been replaced yet again. It seems like it is a game of musical chairs where eliminated participants are eligible to grab a chair again. This round sees Geoffery Vaki replaced by Gary Baki. Baki has previously held the position.

Maternal Health

Save The Children says PNG's poor maternal health record is not surprising. PNG has been rated among the 25 worst countries in the world for maternal and infant health, in a report compiled by Save The Children.

Somare Award

Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare has been announced to receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun - Japan's highest award to foreigners. The award was announced by the Japanese Government when it disclosed the foreign recipients of the 2015 Spring Imperial Decorations.

Bougainville Elections

The people of Autonomous Region of Bougainville have gone to the polls for just the third time since the peace agreement was signed 15 years ago. Over 300 candidates were trying to be elected to 33 general seats and three each reserved for women MPs and ex-combatants plus the election for president.

Goroka Plane Crash

A Cessna single-engine aircraft has crashed off the runway at Goroka and ended up in a ditch after experiencing engine problems recently. It is believed that the aircraft was used for training at a private school in Goroka. People on the ground said the Cessna 206 aircraft had problems with its engine soon after take-off.

Firemen from the Goroka Fire Services sprayed the aircraft after it landed. There was no sign of the Civil Aviation Authority fire service at the scene.

Jackson International Airport

Official have said improved facilities at Jackson International Airport terminal will be ready for international events including the Pacific Games in July. The K100 million project undertaken by Matrix Construction Limited will have world class facilities, including duty-free and coffee shops, and retail facilities.

Land and Housing Scheme

100 Bank South Pacific (BSP) employees have benefited from a ballot drawn to allocate land under the National Affordable Land and Housing scheme. The National Affordable Lands and Housing Program was set up by the Government to assist Papua New Guineans to have the opportunity to own a home. The National Government allocated 100 allotments to BSP and will be been rolled out at Gerehu Stage 3B in the National Capital District.

Son Home After 22 Years

A son given over 20 years ago for medical reasons has returned home to see his mother. The son suffered horrific burns as a toddler inside his family's grass-hut home in the remote highlands in 1993. His mother made the heartbreaking choice between giving him up or watching him die.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has completed his two-day state visit to PNG. PNG PM Peter O'Neill took the opportunity to encourage peace in West Papua during the visit.

A PNG MP says the Melanesian Spearhead Group has failed its original mandate and should be disbanded due to the way its leaders appear beholden to external forces, particularly on the issue of West Papua.

Fong Chun Formosa (FCF) Fishery Company has announced that its first load of Marine Stewardship Council certified skipjack tuna harvested from Pacific Island Nation waters has been delivered to PNG for processing. The sustainable harvest is a first for the region.

Miss PNG Air Services, 2014 Grace Agatha Nugi, has climbed Mt Wilhem. She climbed PNG's highest mountain at 4509 metres to raise funds to purchase mammogram equipment for the four regions of PNG.
