IMF Cautions PNG

With the liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and exports starting in PNG the resource sector growth is projected to surge next year. But PNG has been cautioned that spill over to the rest of the economy may be more limited. This is from the executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Nadzab Held Up

Staff and passengers at PNG's second biggest airport were held up while waiting for an early morning flight recently. A group of 30 men with guns and machetes kept passengers captive for about two hours while they ransacked offices. -- http://giaman.com/pg/?407476

Air Niugini

The National Airline, Air Niugini, has taken delivery of a Boeing B767 aircraft to be used while one of its B767's is in for maintenance. The aircraft is fitted with 247 seats, including business and economy class.

Niugini Aviation

Niugini Aviation owned by Roxon and Ruth Undi from the resource rich area of Ialibu in the Southern Highlands has three aircraft. They bought (or leased) their first Cessna 206 six seater aircraft from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The airline's operating licence was approved in 2013. Some rumours have gone around to say this airline is currently grounded and planes are parked at Jackson's next to the Aero Club. Many of the companies flying in PNG have similar names.

Drifters Released

Two Papua New Guinea men who spent five months adrift at sea in a small boat have been released from hospital in the Federated States of Micronesia. 54-year-old Michael Bolong and 28-year-old Ambros Wavut left Lihir Island in PNG's New Ireland province in July, but ran out of fuel and were caught in a storm.

Telikom Transmitter Upgrade

Telecommunication customers in the Highlands region will reportedly soon benefit from improved voice, internet and data services after national fixed line incumbent Telikom PNG commissioned a new link between Madang and Mount Hagen. According to local press source The National, the high capacity network (HCN) link forms part of a major project being undertaken by Telikom PNG under which it aims to overhaul its national transmission network, with the new connection expected to replace a 20-year-old legacy radio link connecting the Highlands provinces into Lae and Madang.

HMPNGS Lakekamu

A ceremony was held recently to mark the commissioning of the Landing Craft Heavy HMPNGS Lakekamu into service with the Defence Force (PNGDF).

HMPNGS Lakekamu was formerly the Royal Australia Navy Landing Craft Heavy HMAS Labuan, which was decommissioned from Australian service at a ceremony in Cairns last month.

HMPNGS Lakekamu has been named after the Lakekamu River, in Gulf Province, south-western Papua New Guinea, and is the first PNGDF vessel to bear that name.





Talisman Asset Bid

Oil Search Ltd has bid more than US$300 million (K787m) to buy Talisman Energy's assets in Western, a move that could accelerate an expansion of the Pacific nation's flagship gas-export facility, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Prime Ministers of Papua New Guinea and Australia have had an opportunity to discuss bilateral issues when they meet in Canberra recently.

PM O'Neill said he and the Australian Prime Minister have a good working relationship and have regular contact.

IPLC Service Launched

Digicel Business has launched its International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC) Service with key clients at the 13th Papua New Guinea Mining and Petroleum Investment Conference held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney.

Head of Business Solutions for Digicel Pacific, Gary Cobain said, "Customers were the driving force behind the business growth and continued investment in new products and services such as the IPLC service."

New-look Opposition

The new opposition leader, Don Polye, says the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's economic management will be his government's undoing.

Don Polye recently replaced Belden Namah as opposition leader after bringing his Triumph, Heritage Empowerment Party over to the opposition ranks and more than doubling its number of MPs.

New Caledonia Export to PNG

New Caledonia may be on the way to making its first export to Papua New Guinea. This is in the textile industry and by one of its small to medium enterprise (SME) which participated in the just concluded Second Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Investment Roadshow and Trade Fair in Port Moresby.

New Immigration Detention Centre

It is believed Australia is building a new immigration detention facility at Bomana, near Port Moresby, that PNG officials say is specifically for asylum seekers currently on Manus Island.

Australian Federal Immigration Minister Scott Morrison, said "I can confirm that the Department will be building an immigration transit facility in Papua New Guinea,"

"Crying Meri" Launched

Photojournalist Vlad Sokhin has risked his life to document and raise awareness of gender and sorcery-related violence in Papua New Guinea. One of the results of his work, which he has undertaken since January 2012, was the book Crying Meri: Violence Against Women in Papua New Guinea.

The Crying Meri book was launched in September 2014 at Visa Pour L'Image photojournalism festival in France and in PNG's Parliament House in Port Moresby on the 24th of November, 2014 - the day before White Ribbon Day, promoting the campaign to stop violence against women.
