The PNG National Museum and Art Gallery has advised of the passing of PNG's only archaeologist Mr Herman Mandui after a short illness.

Call for National Unity

Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio has called for national unity because it is the greatest strength. At a recent dinner in Lae hosted by the Morobe provincial government, he said in PNG, "our strength is our diversity".

Goroka Show

Over 100 groups from across the country recently descended on a field in the Eastern Highlands for a two-day frenzy of face paint, feathers and photos. The Goroka Show is PNG's biggest sing-sing, the name given to a gathering of tribes or villages where they show off their distinct cultures.

The shows were started in 1957 by Australian patrol officers known as kiaps and began as competitions to see which district was the best organised.





Panguna Mine

Backers of the reopening of the Panguna copper mine in the autonomous Bougainville region have defended their community consultation processes and attacked a report criticising their actions. The report, launched in Australia this month by the Greens leader, Christine Milne, Labour MP Melissa Parke and independent MP Cathy McGowan, found that resentment and mistrust of PNG defence forces, Australia and BCL because of their roles in the conflict, had led to mistrust of discussions around reopening the mine.

PM O'Neill vs Namah

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has said the Ombudsman Commission (OC) has failed in its duty to investigate claims by Opposition Leader Belden Namah that he had spent K50 million (US$20 million) on Members of Parliament in the 2012 national election.

InterOil Drilling Update

InterOil is preparing to set seven-inch casing in the Raptor-1 well in PPL 475 in the Gulf Province of PNG. The casing point is slightly above the Kapau Limestone target zone, and is in line with the well program.

TB 'Emergency'

Authorities in PNG say the spread of Tuberculosis is now a public health emergency. Health officials are projecting around 30,000 infections this year - significantly above last year's figure of around 22,000.

Authorities have launched a tuberculosis awareness programme as the disease continues to spread across the nation. The Prime Minister launched the campaign after reports of hospital wards being full of infected patients and fears the rate would climb out of control.

Church's Softening

A possible changes to the Catholic Church's blanket ban on contraception, in place since 1968 might be the beginning of a change by the Church. This has heartened PNG campaigner Rotarian Wendy Stein. Ms Stein has worked as a Rotary volunteer in PNG for the past eight years, where women and children in remote and rural areas suffer the consequences of no contraception.

Only 26 per cent of women in PNG have access to contraception.

MeriFutbol

MeriFutbol aimed at inviting and encouraging more girls to play football, while also promoting awareness about social issues, was launched in Kimbe, in September to much fanfare.

PNGFA representative Margaret Aka said "The launch created an ideal 'girl's day out' atmosphere and a welcoming environment for girls to play football."

Health Workers Needed

Researchers say there are not enough trained health workers in PNG to deal with the rapidly growing problem of non-communicable diseases. Staff at the University of Auckland's School of Population Health presented findings from projects they have been involved with in PNG.

Ark Peace Visit

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) hospital ship ARK PEACE paid a goodwill visit to Papua New Guinea and carried out humanitarian medical service in Port Moresby from 11 to 18 September 2014. Ark Peace medical personnel worked together with the PNG Defence Force medical staff and provided free medical services to Papua New Guineans.

Namah Already a Millionaire

Opposition leader Belden Namah says he is a self-made millionaire involved in logging and palm oil in West Sepik province long before he became a politician. He said Prime Minister Peter O'Neill was well aware of that.

He was responding to PM O'Neill's call for Namah to explain where he got a reported K50 million (US$20 million) to fund his party's campaign during the 2012 general election. O'Neill said Namah "was not a successful businessman before he went into politics".

Seabed Study 'Flawed'

The environmental impact statement (EIS) released by seabed miner Nautilus Minerals has errors and does not consider contaminants carried directly to land by water, a scientist claims. Dr John Luick, an oceanographer, said in his report on physical oceanographic impact assessment in July, that: "The primary risk to the local people was from shoreward movement of surface waters, which would carry contaminants with them."

Tawali Resort

There is something mysteriously arousing about this place of rest. Rugged coastline blanketed in dense jungle reaches out to touch the calm lapping waters of the bay in a friendly greeting. Community Donate Vegies

A community in Dei district, Western Highlands, has donated two truckloads of vegetables to the Mt Hagen Hospital for its patients. The Yalakiro community from Gumantsi made the donation on Sunday as part of its annual Community Thanksgiving Day to help those in need.

Scientists have found humans have evolved different defences against malaria depending on where they live.

It's took four games but the PNG cricketers finally secured their first victory in the South Australian Premier League, beating the Southern Force by three wickets in Darwin recently.

Landowner groups in the Panguna region in the province of Bougainville are strongly supportive of the Autonomous Government's moves for a return to mining. The government says mining is the best way to quickly create a viable economy.

Road Safety Jingles

A local musician has launched a new album themed on the road safety campaign to help people understand the importance of observing traffic rules. The album by Pati Potts Doi aims to help the Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd and the National Road Safety Council with their road safety awareness campaign.

The PNG Human Rights Film Festival (PNGHRFF) is an annual not-for-profit event that promotes the respect, protection, and fulfilment of human rights in the country. Local and international films highlighting topical human rights issues affecting PNG. Screenings are followed by panel discussions with the audience on how to improve human rights in PNG.
