PM Plants a Tree in Jerusalem

"Planting a tree symbolizes that the world has a future and that we all have life," said the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill at the planting ceremony in Jerusalem's Grove of Nations. Prime Minister O'Neill has now joined the august ranks of dozens of leaders from all over the world who have planted olive trees in this special plot in Jerusalem Forest.

Treasurer Don Polye says there will not be any major changes in next year's budget compared with this year's.

Huawei's National Broadband Network

A major role of Chinese telecommunication systems giant, Huawei, in PNG is to install a national broadband network (NBN) for the country - a role the company was denied by Australia, citing "the national interest".

Air Niugini Incident

An Air Niugini ATR-42-300, P2-PXY freighter on a flight from Madang to Tabubil with 3 crew, rejected take-off from Madang's runway 25, but overran the end of the runway and came to a stop in the waters of the Meiro Creek at about 09:00L (23:00Z Oct 18th). All three crew, from Farnair Switzerland, were able to exit the aircraft through the cockpit escape hatches, one received minor injuries, all three crew have been released from hospital. The aircraft received substantial damage and some reports say the plane will be a write off.

Airlines PNG Loss

Airlines PNG annual report has revealed a net loss of 7 million US dollars last year, after making a 700 thousand dollar profit in 2011.

Rugby League

PNG has been accepted to play in the Intrust Super Cup (Queensland Cup) in 2014. Security concerns for travelling teams remain a stumbling block, especially in the wake of the deadly attack on the Black Cat trail. The Port Moresby Vipers played in the Queensland Cup in 1996 and 1997, but pulled out due to financial issues.

Hull Kingston Rovers

The Hull Kingston Rovers have picked up PNG international players Enoch Maki and Francis Paniu. Maki, a hard hitting prop, and Paniu, a versatile second rower, are from Papua New Guinea's domestic competition and join the Robins on the recommendation of former Kumuls favourite, Stanley Gene, who joined the Robins after impressing at the 1995 World Cup and is now on their coaching staff.

Both signings are subject to international clearance.

The value of Nambawan Super Ltd's assets soared to K4 billion (US$1.5 billion) last year, up nearly half a billion from 2011, board chairman Sir Nagora Bogan said.

NZ Apprentice Secures PNG Job

A building apprentice from Hawke's Bay in New Zealand has secured a two year job with Fletcher South Pacific working in PNG. Adam Knott went up against 90 applicants from all over the world to secure a role on a high-profile $60 million project with Fletcher South Pacific.

Based in PNG for two years, Adam will supervise the building of a swimming complex for the 2015 South Pacific Games.

Angau Memorial Hospital

The National Executive Council in a recent meeting has approved a state of emergency for the Angau Memorial Hospital so that urgent repair work can be fast-tracked at the hospital. The Prime Minister said the NEC has also authorised the Minister for Finance to waiver all tender procedures for supplies and contractors, consistent with the Financial Management Act.

Falling Kina

BPNG Governor Loi Bakani says the country can easily weather the storm of the depreciating kina. He said this to dispel fears that the value of the kina, which had been on the downslide, would continue to weaken and affect the government, businesses and individuals.

A Papua New Guinea MP says the recent security incident outside the Manus Island asylum seeker processing centre was sparked by bad morale within the PNG defence force and he warns it may happen again.

PM Defends Israeli Visit

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has defended his visit to Israel last week with a government delegation, saying it generated many positive outcomes for the nation. O'Neill said the trip was at the invitation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and as a result, PNG had an excellent chance of strengthening its defence and security capabilities.

Real Time Gross Settlement

The Papua New Guinea Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system has gone live on SWIFTNet. The RTGS system links the Bank of Papua New Guinea with participating banks, providing real-time electronic clearing and settlement of high-value, time-critical payments, which eliminates the risks associated with deferred net settlement systems.

Unroadworthy Taxis and PMVs

According to National Road Safety Council chief executive officer Nelson Terema over 75 per cent of the taxis and public transport (the PMVs) running in the nation's capital, Port Moresby, are un-roadworthy and illegal.

Aussie Police

Australian Federal Police (AFP) are tipped to arrive in the country in early November and will be used to help with law and order problems. The deployment was announced by former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and PM O'Neill earlier this year in Brisbane. A similar agreement in 2005 saw the offer of assistance from Australia withdrawn after a constitutional challenge by Luther Wenge (Morobe Governor at the time).





Maternal Infant Health

Australia's closest neighbour, a tropical oasis in the middle of the South Pacific, is Papua New Guinea. However, this jewel of Melanesia is also a place where 40 per cent of the population lives in absolute poverty and for women, complications in labour mean a death sentence.

A disconnection exercise by Port Moresby's Eda Ranu has resulted in a reduction in the consumption of non-revenue generating water. Eda Ranu currently has a debt of about K5.5 million due to the non-payment of water bills over the past ten years.
