PX Towers
Work has begun on an eight-storey, 60-room residential apartment building at Jackson's Airport for Air Niugini staff. The project is expected to reduce Air Niugini's outlay on accommodation costs of more than K3 million. The new building will be built next to the company's head office and will be constructed by Matrix Constructions PNG. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

New PX Boeing
Air Niugini has taken delivery of a new Boeing 737 800 Next Gen. Reg P2-PXE S/n 33024. This is Air Niugini's 3rd Boeing 737. With the arrival of P2-PXE, the airline now has the flexibility to operate six weekly flights to the Philippines with two and four flights to Cebu and Manila respectively. The plane was officially welcomed to the fleet on the 1st of October 2013.

Black Cat Suspects Charged
Six men, five from Bitoi and one from Salamaua, have been charged with three counts of wilful murder, numerous counts of attempted murder, grievous body harm and armed robbery after a recent attack along the Black Cat Track. The youngest of the suspects is a 19-year-old and the oldest is about 27 years of age.

Online Visa System
After years of complaints, a new online visa system has been launched for Papua New Guineans seeking temporary business or tourism travel to Australia. The online visa will not allow business travellers to work in Australia, but permits activities such as attending conferences, negotiations and exploratory business visits.

PNG Tourism Gold
The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority's (TPA) recently won Gold at the Pacific Asia Travel Association 2013 Gold Awards, in China. TPA Chief Executive Officer, Peter Vincent, says the gold awards were a boost for the organization, which receives limited government funding, for marketing and promoting PNG abroad.

GDP Growth
In September 2013 the estimate for gross domestic product (GDP) growth was lowered by the Bank of Papua New Guinea to around 5 per cent from the Peter O'Neill government estimate of 6.1 per cent.

Fraudulent Medicine
The extent of fraudulent pharmaceuticals in the Melanesian islands is unknown, but the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has reported that 47 per cent of anti-malarial medicines tested more widely in the South East Asian region are fake.
In PNG a 2011 study of counterfeit and sub-standard medicines by Goethe University in Germany and the University of PNG found that all 14 samples of the antibiotic amoxicillin and anti-malarial drug amodiaquine taken from five registered pharmacies in the capital Port Moresby were defective.

NCD Betel Nut Ban
A ban on the sale of betel nut (buai) has come into force in Port Moresby but locals are defying the prohibition saying it will affect business. Despite the opposition to the prohibition, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said betel nut chewing was a filthy, unhealthy habit with the ban to remain in place.

IMR Madang
The PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNG IMR) had hoped to have its new offices in Madang funded by the PNG Sustainable Development Program's shareholding in OK Tedi but now that the government has taken control of the mine this could all be up in the air.
PNGIMR's Madang branch carries out the bulk of the Institute's vector-borne disease research including world-class research on malaria, one of PNG's leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

12-Million-year-old Fossil
Palaeontologists from Museum Victoria, Australia and the Smithsonian Institution have rediscovered what they claim are the oldest sirenian fossils ever found in the Indo-Pacific region. The 12-million-year-old fossils - vertebrae and ribs - were discovered in the Selminum Tem cave in the Hindenburg Range of Western province, more than 30 years ago, but remained unstudied.

Helifix PNG
Helifix has secured a contract with ExxonMobil to have a fixed wing aircraft observe the gas pipeline in the LNG project. The company will provide a Cessna Grand Caravan to carry three passengers including the pilot to observe the 420-kilometre gas pipeline from the LNG site to Omati in Gulf province.

Village House Fire
A fire has gutted a home at Mata village, near the Highlands Highway in Sinasina-Yongumugl district, Chimbu. One boy died in the fire and two were severely burnt. It is believed the fire started from a lit candle after the electricity supply to the house was disconnected.

Deep Sea Mining
The controversial deep sea mine - Solwara 1 - to be operated by Nautilus Minerals looks it will go ahead after an international arbitrator had ruled in favour of the mine, and compelled the PNG government to keep to its end of a joint-venture agreement. The arbitration was conducted in Sydney, Australia, under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law's arbitration rules.
