Failed Deportation Attempt

An alleged attempt to deport prominent lawyer, Greg Shepherd, has failed. Mr Shepherd is quoted as saying "Nobody has the power to deport anybody unless proper paper work is produced and I am not going to be kidnapped so I walked away from them"

The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill has denied the claims his government had issued orders to deport the Australian lawyer.

Nursing

Michael Malabag, the Minister of Health says he is annoyed about new graduate nurses not being recruited when the country's hospitals have vacancies for them. He says there are at least 300 nursing vacancies in the country's hospitals and he will be looking at short term measures to recruit foreign personnel.

Christmas Spirit

Christmas in any city can be a dangerous time. Towns in PNG are no different possibly even worse. A recent boating accident has seen five people die when returning from Manubada Island just off the coast of the National Capital. Several fights have reported in Madang and in other centres. Many fights are related to the increased consumption of homebrew over the festive season. The road toll seems to increase with more accidents being reported around the country. Three people have died in an accident at Dokor village, outside Kundiawa town, Chimbu, when the truck they were travelling in veered off the road.

Boating Mishap

Another boating mishap has seen eight people, including six children, die when their boat capsized in rough seas off the coast of East New Britain province. The eight were part of a church group travelling to Lassul Baining to attend a youth convention.

Law Society Slams Govt Threats

The Papua New Guinea Law Society (PNGLS) has expressed concern at the O'Neill government's threats to deport expatriates who made public statements that offended local politicians.

Miss Ahi 2012

As part of the four-day Ahi Festival Noelyn Kahata from Hengali village has been crowned Miss Ahi 2012 at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium Indoor Complex in Lae, Morobe province. Kahata, 21, beat contestants from the other five Ahi villages - Miss Yalu Dodo Miul, Miss Kamkumung Jasmine Hasu, Miss Butibam Pamela Delabu, Miss Yanga Aito Aiten and Miss Wagang Anna Sekep - to be crowned in front of a full house of predominantly Ahi villagers.

First Female Helicopter Engineer

PNG now has its first licenced female helicopter engineer. Shanelle Jahare, currently employed by Goroka based Pacific Helicopters, is engaged in field operations at the oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) project site in Hela and the Southern Highlands provinces.





Electronic ID System

A contract has been signed with Huaweii Technologies for a country wide Electronic Identification System. The system will be managed by PNG with the central database setup in Port Moresby. The system will help improve the voting system, help to maintain proper birth registration and provide more accurate population statistics. The electronic system will cost approx. K230 million.





Coffee Borer

PNG, currently free of the coffee berry borer (CBB), has now established an emergency response plan (ERP) to curb the incursion of the deadly CBB. An amount of K350,000 has been budgeted for annual monitoring and surveillance. The ERP includes both pre-quarantine and emergency response which the latter spells out the management structure, emergency pathway and technical standards for delivery of the ERP

The CBB exists on the Indonesian side of the border and if it enters PNG, it would have adverse effect on PNG's coffee industry.





Private Companies Netball

Air Niugini has flown over the Australian High Commission team in the Private Companies Netball premier division match, winning 14-11. It was a thrilling game as the competition's top two teams battled for supremacy.

UniTech Council

University of Technology in Lae has a new council. The council was set up after the government removed its predecessor because of months of managerial squabbling.

Cheats Miss Out

The Post Courier reports that over 1,500 students out of a total of more than 17,000 have been disqualified from consideration for tertiary study next year. The paper reports 11 schools have been accused of cheating during the 2012 national examinations and consequently the student results have been disqualified from consideration for tertiary education and face an uncertain future, with little or no further education prospects from next year.

PNG Soccer

The English Football Association has helped budding female coaches in the country by running a women's coaching course. The five-day course was held at the PNG Football Academy in Lae and was conducted by English FA regional development officer Marieanne Spacey and England women's goalkeeping coach Keith Rees.

BSP Hospital Donation

Thanks to a donation of K20,000 by the Bank South Pacific the run-down Psychiatric Unit at Madang's Modilon General Hospital is ready to undergo a major facelift after years of neglect.

Madang Roundabout

The biggest roundabout in Madang town has been described as a death trap, especially during the night. Motorists have been warned to take extra precaution during the Christmas and New Year period when driving in the area.

Drifters Rescued

Five people, including a child from Penchal village, Manus, have survived a five-day ordeal at sea. The acting provincial police commander Eric Tawi said the people were rescued by a fishing vessel from the Philippines between Mussau, New Ireland, and Manus.

The Outcome-based Education (OBE) system will remain until a review led by a Government-appointment taskforce into the controversial curriculum is complete at the end of next year.

New Aircraft

Air Niugini has recently taken delivery of two new aircraft, one a Boeing 737-800 (P2-PXC) and the other the first of three, Q-400's (P2-PXQ) at the Jackson's International Airport. Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill in his keynote address assured the airline industry and Air Niugini customers that the government will address all infrastructure requirements with support from funding allocated in the 2013 budget.

PNG Surprise

The PNG hockey players put up a five-star performance with five goals despite going down 9-5 to the Maori team in the Oceania Pacific Cup at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. The Kiwis were firm favourites going into the Oceania Pacific Cup men's bronze medal play-off.

NASFund

Here are some of the highlights of 2012 for NASFUND

1. Membership growth of 10% from 159,397 members in 2011 to 175, 296 members.

2. Active employers grew by 1.7% from 2107 employers in 2011 to 2144 employers.

3. Net Asset Value grew by 13% to K 2.712 billion

4. Return on Investments grew by 526% from a loss of K8.8 m in 2011.

5. Paid out K193 million in member entitlements.

6. Commenced construction of new head office in BSP Haus, Harbour City.

7. Takeover of the Sios Workers Ritaia Fund





ABG Budget

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has passed a K390 million budget for 2013. This is the biggest budget for the ABG since its inauguration in 2005.
