A senior police commander in the national capital of Port Moresby has appealed to the Somare and O'Neill factions to bury their differences and reconcile for the sake of the country.

Mercy Missions

The luxury expedition vessel, True North, has been on numerous missions of mercy around Papua New Guinea since arriving in the country seven years ago. True North is a purpose-built 50m mono-hull vessel in a class of its own able to carry 36 passengers and a crew of 20 with an air-conditioned helicopter permanently on board.

Sinking - Act of God

The owner of the Rabaul Queen continues to maintain that the ship's sinking was an act of God. He has also accused the lawyer assisting the commission of inquiry into its sinking of behaving as if everyone is already on trial. A report is due to be given to the government by the 30th of June.

Many women have nominated for the forthcoming National elections. A total of 135 women are among the 3,435 people who have nominated for the 109 seats. There are 676 more people than nominated for the 2007 elections.

Justice Kirriwom Arrested

Supreme Court Justice Nicholas Kirriwom has been arrested. Last week, the Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia was charged with sedition after the Supreme Court for a second time ordered the re-instatement of Sir Michael Somare as Prime Minister. Justice Kirriwom was one of three Supreme Court judges who made that ruling. He has been released on his own recognisance.

Laverton Rotary Assists

The Laverton Point Cook Rotary Club, in Victoria, Australia has assisted by donating 12 computers to schools near Mt. Hagen. The Rotary Club is now looking at further ways to assist the Mt Hagen community in the country.

New PM

Mr O'Neill has been sworn in as the Prime Minister by the acting Governor General, Geoffrey Nape, at Government House in Port Moresby. Earlier Parliament had elected him unopposed after the acting Speaker of Parliament, (Deputy Speaker) Francis Marus, declared the position of Prime Minister vacant. The vote was called after the deputy speaker upheld a Supreme Court ruling that former prime minister Sir Michael Somare was the country's legitimate leader, however, Sir Michael was immediately disqualified because he had not attended 3 consecutive meetings of parliament.

Risks Ignored

Australian-born Captain Sharp, quizzed by Brisbane barrister Mal Varitimos, told the inquiry in Port Moresby on Tuesday that the ship sank because of an "Act of God". He conceded that when he bought the ship 13 years ago it was being used for smooth waters, in Japan's inland sea.

Fly Flooded

Parts of the country around the South Fly area of Western province have been flooded with at least 26,000 people affected by the floods. Houses that have been built on the ground have been inundated and houses on stilts have water lapping at the top step. The Fly River has burst its banks and caused damage to villages and food gardens affecting thousands of lives.





Political Plane

The PNG Party has handed over K2.3million to purchase a plane from Hevi Lift. The plane will be painted in the PNG Party colours and used to fly along the campaign trail until the start of polling. The plane is similar to the government owned Kumul - a nine seater pressurised King Air B200 series aircraft.





OOH

Operation Open Heart (OOH) has received a K100,000 donation form the National Fisheries Authority. This is to help purchase cardiac surgical equipment and to help meet the cost of airfares and accommodation for the Operation Open Heart anaesthetic team. The team will be travelling from Australia for the annual event that sees hundreds of lives saved in PNG. There have been 18 annual OOH events so far.





Telikom Foundation

The Telikom Foundation has helped the Koki Primary School by donating books to the school library. The books, especially the encyclopaedias, will be used by students and teachers for research and to help with assignments.





Airlines PNG

Many remote airstrips are not much better than the bush tracks leading to them. A Twin Otter (P2-MCZ) operated by Airlines PNG recently came to grief while attempting to land at the Sasereme airstrip several kilometres away from Balimo in Western province. The damage to the runway was not visible from the air when the plane overflew the strip looking for irregularities before landing. The plane suffered minor damage after bursting a tyre crossing a concealed hole in the runway. APNG hope to be able to repair the damage quickly and have the plane underway as soon as the airstrip damage is repaired.





New Aircraft

The national airline has taken delivery of its 21st aircraft. P2-PXI, a Dash 8, arrived in the country recently to a traditional hosing down by Civil Aviation Fire Fighting equipment.

PNG Chef Ranks Highly

A chef from PNG has been ranked second in the annual Australian Chef of the Year competition. Christopher Simulaeta from Milne Bay holds an Australian Development Scholarship and studies at Box Hill in Victoria, Australia.





New Uniforms

PNG Customs has new uniforms. The locally made uniforms were launched at Port Moresby's Jackson's International Airport and were funded by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service under the Strongim Gavman Program.





Goodenough Fishing

The farming of fish in earthen ponds on Goodenough Island, Milne Bay province has become popular with the islanders. It is anticipated that more ponds will be built and extensions made to the existing ponds after 44 fish farmers recently attended a weeklong training course facilitate by the provincial fisheries office in Alotau.





Air Niugini

Due to a restructure Air Niugini is looking for a General Manager to head its Commercial area. The successful applicant will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is expected to actively participate in the strategic and operational management of the airline.

The commander of a New Zealand helicopter squadron being deployed in PNG later this month says its role there will be to provide transport for election officials and their equipment.

Digicel

Digicel continues to roll out mobile telephone towers around the country in an effort to maintain its position in the Telecommunications market within the country. 66 Towers have been upgraded to high-speed third generation (3G) technology. People locate within range of the towers can now enjoy faster data transmission via wireless.
