Canoe and Kundu Festival
The 7th National Canoe and Kundu Festival has come and gone in beautiful Alotau, Milne Bay province. Thousands of people including local and overseas tourists converged on the town to watch the festival. The festival is a celebration of culture and tradition of War Canoes and inherited Kundu drums. PNG's leading bank BSP has secured the naming rights for the next three years with an annual sponsorship of K75,000.
Numbami (also known as Siboma or Sipoma) is an Austronesian language spoken by about 300 people with ties to a single village in Morobe province.
The Austronesian languages are a language family widely dispersed throughout the islands of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, with a few members spoken on continental Asia.
Six escapees have been allegedly shot dead and at least another five admitted to the Mt Hagen General Hospital with serious wounds following a mass breakout at the Baisu jail. Baisu is the major correctional institution in the Highlands.

Robinson River Sawmill
Sawmill equipment maker, AE Gibson and Sons, is nearing completion of an Au$2.5 million project in a remote spot on the Robinson River which flows into Cloudy Bay in PNG. The sawmill is located between the villages of Bonobo and Bam, 250km east of Port Moresby. The site is a five hour drive from Port Moresby.

Diabetes a Time Bomb
World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) senior programme manager, Ulrik Uldall Nielsen, has said diabetes in PNG is a time bomb if left largely untreated. 2007 figures estimate that over 59,000 people in PNG have the condition, and only about 15% of these know they have it. WDF operates in more than 60 countries to raise awareness and help set up treatment programmes.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels Remembered
The contribution of the so-called "fuzzy wuzzy angels" in helping Australian troops fighting the Japanese in PNG has been remembered.
Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, named for their frizzy Papuan hair and compassion, were vital to the survival of Australian soldiers fighting along the Kokoda track during WWII.

Sir Hubert Murray Stadium
The Motu-Koitabu Assembly (MKA) has engaged an Australian firm to manage and advise on all property matters relating to the redevelopment of the Sir Hubert Murray stadium and sports grounds at Konedobu.
Noel Anjo, a non-government organisation activist, has claimed that he was "kidnapped" allegedly on orders from the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare in 2009.

Hidden Valley Mine
The Hidden Valley gold mine in Morobe province, half-owned by Melbourne-based Newcrest Mining and South African miner Harmony, is offering compensation to villagers who have had their livelihood destroyed by pollution from the mine. While some of the villagers are eager to claim the compensation others are saying the amount offered is not enough. The local Member of Parliament, Sam Basil, also believes the offer is inadequate.
New Police Commissioner
Anthony Wagambie has been appointed as the acting Commissioner of the Royal PNG Constabulary due to the suspension by the National Executive Council of Police Commissioner Gari Baki two months before his contract was due to expire.

Aussies Close Border
People have been prevented from travelling from PNG to the Torres Straight Islands due to the Daru Island cholera outbreak. PNG health officials have confirmed the death toll at 16. Australian Health authorities say the water-borne disease is unlikely to spread to the Australian mainland, but they are concerned that the PNG outbreak has reached Daru, a town close to the islands of the Torres Strait. Under provisions of the Torres Strait Treaty villagers are allowed to cross freely between the two countries. The nearest Australian island of Saibai is less than a few kilometres to the PNG mainland and only 50kms from Daru.

Morobe Fish Farms
The environment in parts of Morobe province is ideal for inland fish farming. There are currently about 30 established fish farmers in the remote Wantoat Local Level Government area of Markham, Morobe. While the farmers have the capability of producing plenty of fish the infrastructure to get the fish to market in Lae is lacking.

Mobile phone company, Digicel, is in the process of upgrading all its stores nationwide as part of its renovation rollout program. They have also opened a new concept store in Port Moresby. It is the first Digicel concept store in the Pacific, it will allow customers to experience first-hand all the functions and benefits of mobiles and smartphones sold by the company.
Basic Education Development
The Basic Education Development Project (BEDP) is a cooperative initiative of the Government of PNG and Australia. The education system in PNG deals with about 1.6 million children, 40,000 teachers and 10,000 schools. The First assistant secretary for policy, planning and research with the Education Department has said the time has come for PNG to take over the AusAID funded program. BEDP now operates in all provinces providing capacity building to support the Education Department, districts and communities in the development and maintenance of school infrastructure.

The Autonomous Bougainville Government has set up a committee to investigate the New Bougainville Mining Exploration Company after a petition was received from the regional women representative for central Bougainville Joan Jerome on behalf of the women of Kieta, Wakunai and Panguna. The committee will investigate the nature of the petition. The Company wants to open and operate the mine between Tinputz and Wakunai.
National Planning and Monitoring Minister and Pomio MP Paul Tiensten has estmated the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project will help the country develop an annual budget of around K8 billion.
