Pacific Games
Bob Snow from Sydney advises that the 2011 Games in New Caledonia are not the Mini Games - they are the full Pacific Games. They will be huge. The next Mini Games are scheduled for Wallis and Futuna in 2013 - two years before the PNG full Pacific Games in PNG.

More Prisoners Escape
Prisoners escaping from PNG jails seem to be a full time occupation. Sixteen inmates managed to get away from Jomba police station cells, in Madang recently. The prisoners escaped after a church service in the holding cells. One prisoner gave himself up leaving 15 to enjoy their freedom.
Ahi Micro Credit Scheme
Lae MP, Bart Philemon, has handed over K100,000 to the National Development Bank to start a micro credit scheme for the Ahi villages in Lae District. The scheme will allow Ahi villages with business plans to borrow K500 and upwards with a repayment period of 12 months.

Cruise Ship Visits
Rhapsody of the Seas, a luxury cruise ship, recently paid a visit to Port Moresby. 1000 of the more than 2000 passengers on board were able to experience a sample of the National Capital for half a day.
Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Day
The inaugural Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Day had to be cancelled due to a lack of money. Plans for the special day of remembrance came about after the Australian Government officially recognised their war time assistance in July. PNG's Culture and Tourism Minister, Charles Abel, says the Tourism Promotions Authority and the Kokoda Track Authority will plan ceremonies for next year.
Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Day is to remember the 50,000 Papua New Guineans, known as Angels, who helped Australian Diggers during World War II.

Cadet Pilots Graduate
Seven cadets from PNG have recently graduated from the Coffs Harbour's Professional Pilot Training Program bound for careers with Air Niugini. Over the past 15-months the class has amassed 230 flying hours in the skies above Coffs Harbour and another 35 hours in flight simulation. The only female in the group took top honours. The pilots will start off as first officers on board Dash 8 aircraft and then will progress after three or four years to flying F-100s and eventually 767s. 50 students have graduated through the Training Program since its inception in Coffs Harbour, Australia nine years ago.
Escapee Shot
An escapee from Lakiemata Jail over three weeks ago has been shot while attempting to hold up a bus carrying warders and police near Kimbe in West New Britain. The man, of Dagua, East Sepik and West Kove, West New Britain parentage, died on Sunday morning from his injuries.
Laloki Short of Drugs
The Laloki Psychiatric Hospital is short of an important drug that helps to control the side effects of the hospitals anti-psychotic treatment given to patients at the centre just outside Port Moresby. The drug with a generic name of trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride has not been available from the Department of Health's stores at Badili since September.
Madang Cholera
Courts and schools in the town of Madang have closed indefinitely after the cholera and dysentery outbreak was recently declared in the province by the provincial authorities. The Modilon General Hospital's outpatient ward has also been closed for minor cases as the ward is being used as a consultation and treatment centre for dysentery and cholera patients because the province does not have a treatment centre.

Malaria Fight
The Global Fund based in Geneva has given PNG a grant of K132 million to help fight malaria. The grant will be for the next two years and covers the first phase of the US$146.6 million approved for PNG by the Global Fund board for the next five years. The actual grant amounts to K132,723,765.

Miss South Pacific Pageant
PNG has made a bid for the 2010 Miss South Pacific Pageant to be held in Port Moresby. The 2009 Miss South Pacific Pageant will be held in Suva, Fiji from the 22nd to 28th of November. The pageant has been held since its launch in 1986.

Goroka Fight
The town of Goroka suffered recently at the hands of two rival clans from the upper Asaro area of the province (Eastern highlands). The clans, armed with bush knives, sticks, stones and home-made guns, attacked each other outside the Goroka courthouse. It is believed the attack is connected to a long outstanding dispute over a coffee plantation.

Rampaging soldiers have burnt down a Sunday School classroom and seriously injured three young men in Morobe Province.

Guns Seized
Four semi-automatic firearms have been seized by PNG customs for non compliance with Customs and Civil Aviation Regulations. The firearms were being brought into the country for the police force by ZD Industries a well known authorised gun dealer and supplier of weapons to the three disciplinary forces for the past 30 years. Although the paperwork did not comply the importation of the weapons had previously been approved by the Registrar of Firearms, the Police Commissioner Gari Baki.
Porgera Police Operation
An operation that has been underway for over six months in the Porgera area of Enga province has netted twenty-eight murder suspects. The police have detained others for theft, rape, assault, break-and-enter, cheating and other offences. Police also arrested two senior police officers from the Paiam police station over the disappearance of K100,000 bail money that had been collected. Apart from tracking down alleged criminals the exercise is aimed at reducing social problems like prostitution, illegal mining, bootlegging, drug peddling and illegal firearms.
Lihir Gold
Lihir Gold Limited is still on target to produce more than one million ounces of gold for the year. 770,000 - 840,000 ounces of this will be from Lihir Island.
Holy Rosary Anniversary
The Holy Rosary primary and elementary school in the Nation's Capital has celebrated its silver jubilee. The school was founded by Fr Sam Driscoll, a Catholic priest (a Capuchin Franciscan) in 1984. The school currently caters for 950 students at the primary level and another 600 in elementary school.
Asbestos Concern
Medical experts in the country have called upon the government to ban asbestos products. Asbestos has been banned by most countries around the world but is still in use in the construction and building industry in PNG. Asbestos was once used in nearly every construction project around the world. It has been linked to the rare and aggressive cancer mesothelioma. Mesothelioma affects thousands of people worldwide every year.
