Airport Vandalism
An international flight had to be diverted to Cairns instead of being able to land at Jackson's International Airport recently due to poor lighting caused by vandalism to lights. Air Niugini confirmed that Flight PX 9, inbound from Manila and due to land at 4:50 in the morning, was diverted to Cairns, Australia, due to poor lighting on the runway. The plane, an airbus leased from White Airways of Portugal, returned to Port Moresby about six hours later during daylight hours. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed that eight of runway lights had been damaged by vandals.
CAA chief executive officer Joseph Kintau said two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and are in custody awaiting police charges.
104 Year Sentence
Two men have been sentenced to a total of 104 years in jail for their part in an attack on a businessman and the rape of his wife and daughter two years ago. One man was jailed for 53 years and the other for 51 years.
The man receiving the longest sentence of 53 years received 15 years for armed robbery, 20 years for the rape of the coffee buyer's wife, and 18 years for the rape of the daughter. The other man sentenced to 51 years received 15 years for armed robbery, 18 years for aiding the rape of the man's wife and another 18 years for helping in the daughter's rape. Justice Les Gavera-Nanu ordered that their sentences would be served cumulatively, which is after each other. Justice Gavera-Nanu said he decided to impose cumulative sentences because the crimes were serious.
Malaria Vaccination
Welsh scientists believe they are close to developing a new vaccine and treatment for one of the world's most deadly diseases. Academics at Swansea University believe a breakthrough in their research into malaria could save millions of lives.

City Pharmacy
City Pharmacy has posted a profit of more than K5 million for 2007. In its announcement to the Port Moresby Stock Exchange the company said it posted a net profit after tax of K5,087,046 in 2007, or 17.47% better than the net of K4,330,935 it achieved in 2006.
Digicel Mobile
Francis Kalukal from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia writing to The National newspaper has said that Digicel is slowly but surely losing its edge compared with the time it introduced competition in the telecommunication industry in PNG. -- http://www.thenational.com.pg/032008/letter3.htm

Cemetery Full
The nine-mile cemetery just outside Port Moresby is full and will soon close its gates to the city's dead. National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has said that "we will now have to look for other land for the cemetery."
National Museum
The National Museum and Art Gallery at Waigani is now open. Museum director Simon Poraituk said with the installation of the new air-conditioning system, the humidity in the building is excellent. The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 3.30pm and is closed on Saturdays unless prior arrangement have been made, while on Sundays it is open from 1pm to 3pm.

Pangtel Problems
PNG's telecommunication authority (Pangtel) has been without a board for almost 3 years and all its executive powers assumed by an acting chief executive whose own appointment in April last year has been deemed as questionable by some. The acting CEO position is being challenged in court by Pangtel's former legal officer Paul Amaiu, who had been sacked.
Lae Blackout
The town of Lae and surrounding areas suffered a blackout for 18 hours during the Easter period. It stretched from Sunday morning until after midnight and marred an otherwise mellow Easter weekend in Lae. In some parts of the city, the blackout was for more than eight hours but in areas including the Buimo Rd. residents were without electricity from Sunday 8am until early Monday morning.
PM's Birthday
On the 9th of April this year the Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare will celebrate his 72nd birthday. It will be a double celebration for him he will also celebrates 40 years of continuous active participation in politics since 1968.
Oro Agriculture
The Agriculture and Livestock Restoration Programme in Oro province will receive an earmarked K33.2 million over a five-year period. The Government believes this is the way forwards towards improving and empowering the rural population affected by Cyclone Guba in the province.
New Morobe Police Commander
Long-time police investigator Supt Peter Guinness has taken over from Chief Insp Augustine Wampe as the provincial police commander (PPC) of Morobe Province. Supt Guinness said his first task was to organise police operations for the local level government (LLG) elections next month and that other provincial command matters would be addressed after the LLG election operations.
Motu Koitabu Council
The Motu Koitabu council (MKC) will have four additional electorates carved out before elections which will be conducted simultaneously with the local level government elections throughout the country next month. The Council used to have a 10-member-council established under the National Capital District Commission Act but that act has been repealed and now it will have 16 elected members and three nominated members.
Local level government (LLG) councillors in the Western Highlands province have called on the National Government and the Electoral Commissioner to do away with the council elections.
Lae urban local level government has engaged 10 young men from the six wards in the city to mow the lawns in their respective wards.
Kimbe Shootout
Kimbe town was the site of gun fights over the Easter weekend, with police exchanging fire with suspected criminals in one incident, and with their own colleagues in another.

Minimum Wage
The National Executive has approved the terms of reference (TOR) to set up a 2008 Minimum Wages Determination Board to review the minimum wage of K26.95 set many years ago.
Bomana War Cemetery
The visit by the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to Bomana War Cemetery was of special significance to the Aussie PM because he spent some time alone at the grave of Lt. George Parkinson. A 25-year-old lieutenant who was killed in action during August 1943, fighting the Japanese at Buna, on the coast of Oro Province. The girlfriend Lt. George left behind in Australia would later marry some one else and have children. One of them was Kevin Rudd. So the Aussie PM had reasons quite apart from prime ministerial respect and duty, to pause and reflect at the War Cemetery.
